Magic missile vs mirror image

Rules Questions

Had an issue come up. Can a PC use magic missle on a target with mirrior image up to pinpoint witch one is real. If so, can other party members use that to also pinpoint the real target during the same sequence of initiative.
that is
1. wizard - cast magic missle at enemy magus with mirrior images.
magic missle auto hits correct target (sheild negates damage)
2. fighter - charge target hit buy magic missle, ignoring other images.

thoughts please

Mirror image does not stop targeting with spells, but you still never know which one is real just because you hit the caster.
The spell has all those images in one square kind of overlapping.
If you could just hit one to reveal which one was the caster you would have have to roll the dice for every attack, which is what the spell says you have to do.
Magic missile autohits so there is no chance to hit the images. In 3.5 the images could be targeted with magic missile due to the way the spell was written, but since the images moved about you still never knew which once was the correct on.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

ah, great way to explain it.
ty, hopefully that will cool some jets.
i forgot about the same square and over laping discription
and the moving bit.
thanks again

When you cast magic missile at a mirror imaged target, all of the images appear to be hit, just like all of the images appear to take damage if fireballed.

EDIT: The search feature is your friend ! Type the terms "magic missile mirror image" into the message board search box and get back lovely threads like this one.

Silver Crusade

The way it has been ruled for me is - You roll for each image, and if it hits an image, it pops it. If it hits the caster instead, you can send all the remaining images at that caster.

The problem is, the remaining images still whirl and confuse, so the next attacker cannot identify the caster even if hit my Magic Missile.

My caster uses magic missile specifically to pop images, because the burly fighter types do more damage.

There's actually a FAQ for this, eleven days after the last time this thread was active. Revenge of the FAQ Attack Magic Missile and Mirror Image do not interact at all. From Mirror Image: "Spells and effects that do not require an attack roll affect you normally and do not destroy any of your figments." Magic missile does not require an attack roll, therefore it always hits the target and never a figment.

And here's a link the the FAQ that shows that:
