Ok, lets look at the Dire Rat. It is a small animal, and a good wizard summons it so it has the Celestial template. Now the Celestial template does NOT confer the Magical Beast type, and there are no Magical Beasts in the Summon Monster list.

Going back to 3.5, the spells actually summoned a "celestial xxxx" which was a Magical Beast, but with Pathfinder, the specific creatures were dropped and they were templated.

So my question is, what kind of creature is it? Extrplanar, yup. But is it still considered an animal, or is it a magical beast?

It is an animal. They should have changed the text in the summon spells. I will FAQ it, and hopefully others will also to get it errata'd before the next printing.
