12 types of Oni sorted by book?

Jade Regent

A bit confused with something I just noticed near the back of Brinewall Legacy. It describes the 12 most common types of Oni, and gives the book locations for some (Ogre Mage in Bestiary 1, Yamabushi Tengu in the back of Brinewall Legacy, 3 types of Yai as well as the Kuwa and Spirit in the at the time upcoming Bestiary three).

The book then says the remaining 5 types of Oni will be in the remaining 5 Jade Regent books. However (I own the first four books as well as the three bestiaries at this point) I've seen 11 of 12 Oni introduced already. The only Oni I've yet to see is the Wind Yai.

Since the Ice Yai wasn't listed as one of the Oni that was going to be in Bestiary 3, despite being there now, can we assume the Ice Yai was originally going to be in one of the Jade Regent Bestiaries? And does that mean Tide of Honor doesn't introduce any new Oni? (I don't have that part yet, but I know it's out, and I'd be willing to bet that the last to arrive, the Wind Yai won't be given to us until The Empty Throne).

Tide of Honor has the Earth Yai.

Hunh, so that's what threw me off. The 'Types of Oni' section in Brinewall Legacy says there are only 12, and it lists 12 types of Oni other than Earth Yai. I wonder if that was an oversight.

Sovereign Court

The "Ecology of the Oni" article in Brinewall Legacy was written before all the oni were finalized, both in Bestiary 3, and in the later volumes of Jade Regent.

Here's the breakdown:
Bestiary: ogre mage
Bestiary 3: fire yai, ice yai, kuwa oni, spirit oni, void yai, water yai
The Brinewall Legacy: yamabushi tengu
Night of Frozen Shadows: nogitsune
The Hungry Storm: atamahuta
Forest of Spirits: ja noi
Tide of Honor: earth yai
The Empty Throne: wind yai

So you're actually getting 13 oni instead of 12. Note that the 12 oni listed in the article are only the most "common" oni - really, any creature with the humanoid type can have an associated oni who takes that form.

Neat, thanks. I have to admit I was wondering at first why there wasn't an earth yai mentioned in ecology of the oni. It makes sense that that stuff wasn't finalized since Brinewall Legacy was from several months ago.

Looks like I was right about having to wait until the end for the wind yai though. On one hand, too bad since I was looking forward to that particular type of oni, but on the other hand another month of waiting is nothing really.

Again, thank you for the replies, both of you.
