[PDG] Purple Mountain - Level One - Free for a Limited Time...

For a very limited time, the first volume of our Purple Mountain megadungeon is available as a free download

(I admit, I'm stealing this promotion idea from Robert Thomson of 4 Winds Fantasy Gaming but I think he'll forgive me)

Thanks for the promo, guys! This has been on my "to get" list for a while now. I'm looking forward to reading through it, and to Level 2!

No problem Readerbreeder. We are hard at work on many levels of Purple Mountain so don't be surprise if they are non-sequential. In fact, I'm looking for playtest groups for level 10. If you are interested drop me an email.

Do you have any idea as to a timescale for release? I like the theme and I'm tempted to run this as a PbP on this site set in somewhere like Osirion. However, I don't want to run through the first level only to have to leave the group hanging for the second instalment!

However, if you are looking for online playtesting groups, I'm happy to participate albeit probably at lower levels. My experience with Pathfinder in the higher levels is probably too limited for proper playtesting.

I'm a sucker for free stuff. Ordered. I will download when I get home and read it after the kiddies go to bed on Saturday or Sunday. I'll let you know what my thoughts are then.

And, thanks for stealing the idea from Robert Thomson. His promotion led to me place some 4WF products in my cart that I will order as I am able to within my budget.

Each release can be run as a single, stand-alone dungeon. Almost like a modular module system, weird. Anyway, the timescale for the releases is slower than I would like because PDG is a two-person operation plus a handful of freelancers. I wrote level one, I have an outline of level two, Stefen has an partial draft of number seven and level ten just came in for playtesting. So we are working but I don't think it would be wise for me to make any sort of promises to a timeline.

My hope is that by the end of February, level ten will be out and Level two will go into playtesting. But progress on level two completely depends on the amount of time I can get away from doing layout and actually spend writing.

I'm not sure if I answered your question there or not. I hope so.

Sure does! I could get level 1 up and running here and perhaps have a group in position to play test level 2?

Dark Archive

Glad to hear that additional levels of the mountain are still on the way--this first volume is a fun one and the final encounter is a great departure from the typical for a low level party. If you've not tried this out, I certainly encourage anyone to do so!

Liberty's Edge

Just downloaded it ...

The map is very nice! Kudos to the cartographer!

Kristian Richards is the cartographer, he runs Crooked Staff Publications and has several map products available.

Thanks Gozuja.

Scarab Sages

I got a copy as well. Thank you, Purple Duck folks.

We hope you enjoy it. It would be awesome if several people played it so that it could gain its own obituary thread. I love those threads.

I appreciate the invite, and I would love to, but I am currently without a regular group right now (more's the pity). If I find or build a new group in the relatively near future, would you object to an inquiry as to which levels need playtesting at that time?

Information for any who are interested; Crooked Staff Publications (who created the cartography for this product) have a battle-map version of the dungeon level for sale on RPGNow, here. Plus, it's only 99 cents!

Wow, that's not much like an old school megadungeon level. It's too small, it's too closely controlled by a single monster group, and it's way dense with monsters (there should be about half as many monster inhabited rooms, I think) It does however, have a good non-linear map and multiple passages between levels, so those are things in it's favor.

Crooked Staff will be doing similar battle maps for each level.

It also has unpredictable magic pools and fiendish traps!

In fairness, I think that it's a good hook to get you interested in the mega dungeon as a whole. It's pitched so that at medium advancement, the entire party hits level 2 at the end of the dungeon which, to me, is good pacing.

While it might not be to everyone's tastes, it certainly interests me and I've got recruitment up just now for a PbP should anyone want to give it a crack.

Great idea, thanks! Always on the look out for good mega dungeons so I'll be very keen to see how this shapes up. Currently running a 2nd level party through Necro's old Crucible of Freya, so this will be perfect to drop into the Stoneheart Mountain area along the way.

Any kind of timetable for subsequent level releases? I'm not certain that doing them in the order of 1, 10, 2, 7 as suggested above is going to be the most user friendly though. What's the idea behind that? Also, any chance of a future print release compiling the lot?

There is currently no timetable for subsequent levels. Purple Mountain Level 10 has been submitted and it has just entered playtesting. So it is likely the next release.

Each level of Purple Mountain is designed to stand on its own as well as being part of a larger campaign. So if you want a megadungeon, you will probably need to wait for a few more parts but if you want a level 1 dungeon we have you covered now and level 10 will be available soon.

Level Two has an outline but I need time to work on it.

You're not supposed to be able to clear out an entire level of a megadungeon, let alone be expected to do so.

I fail to see why not, as most mega dungeons start you out at level 1 then rushing ahead might get you in over your head. Looking at the map and module, it seems to flow well so I think that it should work out well.

However, I did notice that Gauntlet is spelt incorrectly in the title bar for area 2.

Indeed it is. That must go on my list of corrections.

Level 1, Purple Mountain for anyone who wants to lurk and see how the dungeon performs.

Party make up is:

Halfling Paladin 1
Dwarf Rogue 1
Half-Orc Oracle 1
Half-Elf Sorcerer 1

I specified no min-maxing in the recruitment thread. Something to keep in mind if your regular group tends to playing that way.

I'm setting the mega dungeon just north of An on the River Sphinx in Osirion (I believe there is synergy between Osiriani culture and the Locust Lord), with the "Purple Mountain" being one of the mountains next to Mount Na-Ken. This then gives the party access to both An and Sophis as the mega dungeon progresses and they need to liquidise assets.

The small encampment around which they will operate is going to permit them to purchase common gear, masterwork weapons and probably a limited selection of potions.

As I was reading this over the weekend I noticed a bunch of easy-to-correct errors (spelling or homonyms). I remember thinking, "I should open up a word document and note all of these."

Then I didn't do it. If I get around to doing this this week, where should I send the info?

There is still a little time left to pick up your free copy of Purple Mountain - Level 1!

Do you mean homonyms (words spelled the same but with different meanings; lead-the-metal as opposed to lead-a-person-who-takes-the-foremost-position) or homophones (words sounded the same but spelled differently with different meanings; there-their-they're being the most common example)? I suspect the latter.

Apologies; I'm sure Mr. Gedak knew what you meant, but The Stuffy Grammarian seems to be AWOL and I just taught a lesson on this to my 9th grade English Support students the other day!

Any news on when the other levels will be available for purchase?

Purple Mountain levels 2, 3, 4, 5 are all with writers.

Purple Mountain 10 is on the editing pile and I have art for the maps. So I need to to get some art for key NPCs but I would expect we will see it for sale in late March and the other levels following on quickly behind it.

Purple Mountain is dear to my heart so we are working at it but it is a slower product type to produce than say a Book of Trapped Chests and Containers or even one of our legendary treasures series.

This month there are conceivably going to be four additional products available on top of Purple Mountain - Level 10 (which needs a subtile yet): Legendary VI: Legendary Armor by Marc Radle, Flensing Otyugh by Sam Hing, Monstrous Races 3 by Sam Hing, and Memorable Townsfolk by David Nicholas Ross. For each I'm waiting a bit for final editing of text or final art.

Actually, a strict definition of a homonym is two or more words that have both the same spelling and the same pronunciation, but different meanings, e.g. "I was right to turn right."

You're right that words that are written differently but pronounced the same are homophones, such as they're, there, and their. Words that share the same spelling but different pronunciations are homographs, such as "wind" that rustle trees and "wind" that rhymes with "bind."

In order to be a homonym, the example words must be both homophones and homographs.
