An oracle, a shadowdancer, and a warlock walk into a bar...

So, my campaign is undergoing a bit of revision after a nigh-TPK. The drow warlock survived and will soon be allied with a tiefling ranger 4/rogue 3/shadowdancer 1 and either a drow oracle of the Dark Tapestry or a tengu oracle of Wind.

The campaign is also moving from the underdark to an Oriental Adventures-type campaign. They're going to start out in a Singapore-like citystate and have the option of traveling to an Egyptianesque China, an Aztecesque Thailand (with dinosaurs!), a Hawaiianesque Japan (that is also the major maritime power), or a steampunky Persianesque India.

I think this might be a caper campaign, or Thieves Guild campaign.

Any ideas for adventures or campaign-long story arc? They're starting at 8th level.

EDIT:

I kind of want to riff on "Gardens of the Moon" and have a bunch of shadowy type hang out at the same tavern, trading gossip and rumors and adventure hooks. I might even map out the neighborhood, so they have a pretty wide and diverse base of operations.

As they are traveling to other places they should do something that makes them explore the new culture, gods, environment and stuff like that..

Make them do something completely new. Make them face something that they never knew excited.

I'm thinking of having a mysterious cult of white-robed tengu.

Don't know what to do with them, though.

Well lets make something.

But!
Is it a... travel to his place.. complete that.. take the reward.. now back/to the next place!

Or.. are they going to be there for a long time?

Note that under the current RAW, the Shadowdancers HiPS ability does not gain him auto Sneak attack. Currently, under the RAW, Stealth does not make your foe lose his Dex bonus.

No, but what HIPS does allow is the Shadowdancer to more easily get a surprise round in -- in which his foes are flat-footed and thus are vulnerable to sneak attack.

True- and also maneuver to get flanking.

Currently, they are going to be teleported from a temple they were raiding to a new world.

I'm kind of thinking of maybe having a conflict between the animal-headed bipeds (kenku, kitsune, gnolls, garuda, rakshasa) against the human-headed quadrupeds (manticores, sphinxes, nagas, etc.).

I would like to have 3rd side to the conflict. Maybe taurics? Centaurs, mermaids, cecaelias, driders, etc.

Would it be overpowering to give the shadowdancer sneak attack +1d6 at levels 1, 4, 7, and 10? 2, 5, 8?

Sure, but being unseen would.. and if you're successfully hiding then you're unseen until you've attacked.

Nope. Just Invisible. That's under the current RAW, there is a blog about changing the rules for stealth, perception, etc.

Unseen does not make your foes lose their DEX.

It does in my world. I know the argument against it and discount it. It's up there with 'this is a new edition so all old bets are off until they specifically say they're not and even then I'll grouse about it'.

If you are not detected then you are invisible to your target. Easy and simple.

PS: Smilodan: I suggest that you work with the player and make a similar PrC out for them that is less 'shadow magic'-based. Or failing that simply make hide in plain sight an advanced rogue talent and talk to them about either being pure rogue or creating a feat that will let them count ranger levels towards qualifying for talents and rogue levels towards advancing ranger abilities... 3.5 had a few multiclass friendly feats like that- take a look and make one up that suits you and the player.

We just finished the first session. It went relatively well, except the PCs were invisible and flying or levitating when they teleported to their new city, so they didn't make a big splashdown in the big lake.

Oh, well.

Then they kept avoiding the main adventure hook through flight and invisiblity... but they eventually joined the party and had fun. Then a wandering monster encounter with some pickpocketing dandasuka rakshasa took way too long, so they never made it to their new home base.

Oh, well.

This gives me more time to flesh out the neighborhood of their new home base.

I like having a party of all +3/4 BABs. It makes it easier to design encounters.

Sure, that's a reasonable houserule. Check out the Blog for how Paizo is thinking about changing it.

Still, I wanted to remind the Op about the current RAW, as a LOT of people take one level of shadowdancer just to get unlimited sneak attack.

In another campaign, I play a dark whisper gnome ninja (3.5 converted). Dark creature is a template from Tome of Magic, and it grants Hide in Plain Sight. So I'm pretty comfortable with Hide in Plain Sight, thanks.

We're houseruling Shadow Dancer gets Sneak Attack at 1, 4, 7, and 10. Since it's a 3 character caper campaign, it should be OK. He only got to sneak attack 1 or 2 times today, as they used Stealth, flight, and invisibility to avoid conflict....for the most part.
