Spell Question

Rules Questions

I am GMing a small group and we had a problem last night. My wife wanted to use "sleep". I had to tell her no because i could not find 4hd on any of the creatures they were fighting. What would the HD refer to in this instance.

Grand Lodge

the number of hit dice on the creature(s) in question.

Sovereign Court

When reading monster's stats:

ex:
"hp 95 (10d8+50)"

that's the number of hit dice.

Thank you so much. I was starting to think I was nuts when I could not find that in the book.

For an ordinary NPC (like a human), the number of HD is equal to the number of class levels. For instance, a 4th level human fighter could be affected by sleep.

Wow. There's an ever increasing number of trap for new players in there that we don't even realize are there. I had noticed the change from the 3.5e way of showing hit dice and hit points, from:

3.5e format wrote:
Hit Dice: 5d8+5 (27 hp)

to

Pathfinder format wrote:
hp 27 (5d8+5)

But hadn't consciously realized that it actually left out information. After all, you wouldn't know that the 5 was actually the hit dice unless you already knew what hit dice were.

It had been kind of nagging at me, because it takes me a fraction of a second longer to find hit dice in the new stat blocks than it used to (because they're not labeled). Not long enough to cause problems, but long enough for the back of my mind to notice a delay.

Funny thing is, it doesn't even save space, since it's still one line.

I have long complained about parts of the new pathfinder statblock (Including the way HD/HP are handled), it seems to me that with the emphasis on always just giving creatures average HP anyway, they wanted to de-emphasise HD and yet there are still effects in the game that are based upon HD (such as the sleep spell).
