Need recommendation for skinning a Jian (Tai-Chi style) sword.

Advice

What established sword type, from Pathfinder RPG, would you use to represent a Jian sword?

Probably a shortsword or better yet a rapier. it looks finessable, small light and fast, but not particularly heavy or damaging.

Rapier seems to be the closest fit out of the corebook.

Shadow Lodge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Maybe an Aldori Dueling sword? It can be Weapon Finessed, and acts like a longsword. Maybe you could mod it to be a Monk weapon?

I'd say that it counts as a rapier that does piercing or slashing damage (unlike rapiers the jian is made for both).

I was thinking rapier myself... I think it would be a good fit. Thank you for the input! :-)

Temple Sword
Longsword stats, monks are proficient.

This isn't a Jian sword... its more of a heavy Dao with the rings/bells along the backside. But thanks for the input- might help others who are looking for the proper Asian-flavored weapon. :-)

Grand Lodge

The single handed version would be a Long Sword. The larger two handed version I would make a Bastard Sword.

I would not consider a Rapier or Short Sword due to the fact both weapons are Piercing while the Jian is primarly a slashing weapon.

Liberty's Edge

True to a point.
A Jian is much lighter than an traditional Longsword, though. Its purpose is to swiftly cut through light armored weak spots in the enemys armor rather than Slashing forcefully. Therefore I agree that a Rapier fits best.

What is a Jian Sword?

Historically, the Wu Mountian monasteries used straight bladed swords, both piercing and slashing. Other name brand techniques used two mirrored slashing weapons.

For the Jian I did in Luven Lightfinger's Gear & Treasure Shop, I just made it a longsword with the "monk" special. For the Shangshou Jian, the two-handed version, I just used a greatsword.

Longsword.

This is a good explanation of what I am thinking of: Wikipedia entry for Jian

As shown, that's essentially identical to the European arming sword, which is the model for the D&D "longsword." A straight, double-edged sword about 3 ft. long and weighing 2 to 2.5 lbs shouldn't have different combat stats just because of its country of origin! (Then again, I also don't think the "kama" should have different stats from the sickle).

I'm kind of shocked the Jian didn't end up in UC...

I had this same issue in a 3.5e game once, and we decided (both DM and players) that the Jian can just be a Longsword.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry but compaired to the typical longsword the Jian is an elegant (unfortunatelly therefore a bit fragile) Weapon designed for an swift and agile fighting style rather than brute force. It is lighter and shorter than an arming sword and fits the Rapier much better.

Lantern Lodge

use the wakazashi stats from ultimate combat. it's finessable, it can be used for both slashing and piercing. it has a rapier's enhanced crit range.

Good skin that... either that or the Aldori sword which someone else called out as finesable.

Plus it has a feat line. Just make the damage S/P.
