Half fiend question

does a creature gain the fly speed if they do not have a land speed (i.e. does a whale or fish with only a swim speed now gain a fly speed)? If so how do you calculate it?

I see no reason why they wouldn't get a Fly speed. Also, I think a half-fiend whale (which sounds pretty awesome) with wings would have a not-so-good maneuverability due to it's size.

Shadow Lodge

yeah but it states that it's fly speed is double it's walk speed, think that's means it only works on those with walk speeds. If it's meant to mean otherwise though how do you calculate it's fly speed?

p.s. with you half fiend flying moby dick might be one of the most horrifying things a pc could lay their eyes upon.

This is a very good question. Obviously, if it has a walk speed, the fly speed calculation is easy.

One could justify that a monster/animal's primary means of locomotion is arguably it's "walk speed" for purposes of your question.

For instance, the half fiend moby dick, used to having resistance in the water, and having none in the air, would be perfectly justified in being VERY fast while airborne. And, likely, VERY maneuverable for the same reason.

It's all up to your GM interpretation, but this I think is reasonable.

The template says "the half-fiend flies at twice the base creature's land speed (good)." So, a strict reading means an aquatic creature with no land speed doesn't fly. I'm not fond of strict reading putting limits on what I can do as a GM. Thus, my answer is, "If I want the half-fiend whale to fly, then it can fly."

Precisely. My ruling would be the creature's primary form of locomotion, whether it be walk, swim, crawl, ooze, etc....would be considered it's "land speed" for all intents and purposes.

Therefore, the fiend template's fly speed would be double it's primary locomotion speed.

thank you all. In the end I think the answer is that in the strictest sense of the wording it wouldn't get a fly speed, that being said I just ran the encounter with the monster a few weeks ago and the beast had wings (they were the daemon spawned gar's rotted sides that would sheer off and become these horrid meaty flays it used to propel itself through the air). Unfortunately it didn't get to fly during the encounter, though it did manage to near digest one of the party members and the titan mauler had to impale it on a large harpoon. Luckily though they did get to see them when the town stuffed it and turned it into a trophy displayed within the town. ^-^
