Well you could just make an escalating conflict over a seeming less border skirmish that might ended up being something more unbeknownst to us.
We are fighting a guerrilla from South America that gives us a hard time to establish a foothold which there are plenty of those in South America in real life, but you can just started as a recon mission and escalate the conflict from there.
Simple conquering/subjugation of South America.
South America has become a known place for harboring criminals and mercenary groups that trade freely there and we are just tired of this pirate country that protects them and keeps them out of justice and benefit from it as they probably charge some money out of it.
There are plenty of plot ideas xD just there for ya to develop.
