My Oracle is a bit mental. Well, I think he's sane, but everybody thinks he's mental. He has the haunted curse, and I RP him interacting with the spirits that haunt him, which nobody else can see. Ok - that's the short personality bit that justifies the question.
He's a halfling, and he bought a dog as a mount. He talks to the dog, and he can hear it talking back. It was weeks before he pronounced the dog's name, becuase the dog (according to the Oracle) wouldn't tell. When he did, he scandalized the party by announcing that his dog was Aroden.
Now, my Oracle is 100% convinced that this is the real Aroden, reincarneated as a dog, and working to return to his former glory. Nevermind that he lets a (presumed)crazy halfling ride on his back and spends most of his time sleeping in the corner. My fellow adventurers figure I'm a nutter, but I'm not very dangerous, and it amuses them.
Ok, so here's the question: I want to begin Using Aroden in combat, and asked my GM if I could dip into Cavalier and use the feat from UC that allows it to level by my character level and not my Cavalier level. My GM suggested that instead of a level and a feat, I wait one level (We're 8) and at level 9 take Leadership, and declare my Cohort to be Aroden. Assign him class levels (I guess Warrior or barbarian?) and continue on my path as an Oracle.
Given that that was a GM suggestion, I know he'll allow it, but how do I do it? Can Dogs take levels in warrior? what about barbarian (Aroden Rages! Foaming at the mouth, he charges the Vampires!) Do I just make his effetive class "Animal Companion" as would have happened anyway? Is there an easier way to be effective in combat with an animal than this? (I don't consider him effective now because of his low HP and AC)

Generally speaking, animals can't take class levels unless they have an intelligence above 3 (if I'm wrong can someone please correct me, preferably with quoted text?)
If your GM won't let you 'upgrade' him via racial hit dice, get an 'Awaken Animal' cast on him, and proceed with whichever class you feel appropriate that the GM will allow. Ranger is an EXCELLENT choice for creatures like dogs, but if the DM insists on NPC classes, Warrior works ok.

Don't have the rules in front of me - how much would an NPC charge for a casting of Awaken?

First, you'd need a 9th level NPC, so your DM may make you work to find such a character to hire.
Secondly, you will find the rules for hiring spellcasting here A 5th level spell cast at 9th caster level will cost 450 gold.
Furthermore, Awaken has a 2,000 gold material component.
Thus, the total is 2450.
