Becoming a ghoul.

Can you become a ghoul, or other undead using the create undead spell, or it's greater version, and still advance as a pc?

Ghoul isn't a templet you just become a normal ghoul. However the Gm may add class levels if he likes. but the spell just makes a normal ghoul.

Hint: This is best used on people not advanced enough to match the ghouls power.

Grand Lodge

Are there any undead within the animate dead/create undead line of spells, that can advance in pc levels?

None that are made that way. However any of them that live long enough and have enough of a mind to do so can gain levels like anything else. It isn't as common but they could gain class levels over time.

I know a set of really good 3.5e houserules/templates for that.
Then again, I suspect that your DM would not allow it simply because it's "homebrew" and not official. *Rolls eyes*

If you are becoming a intelligent undead, do you retain your class levels, feats?

Only if it is a templet and says you do. Vampire, lichs and the like.

In Golarion, the most common way for a ghoul to retain class levels and feats and basic personality is to become a ghoul in the presence of lazurite, a rare mineral found in the darklands. If the GM wants to go with that, using an expensive hunk of lazurite as an extra material component during a create undead or create greater undead spell could be just the mcguffin needed to allow that to occur.

Otherwise, that's what wish, miracle and limited wish spells are for, doin' stuff that the rules don't normally allow. :)

How much does Lazurite cost?

My question would be: why would you want to become a ghoul?

Master Arminas

I actually once thought of trying out a Ghoul Rogue. Hey, it sounds like a cool thing to RP, and different from the norm. XD

Coolness factor, RP opportunity, flavor appropriate.

My guess is priceless; something like this is extremely rare, especially above ground, and would probably have to be sought out by the party. It carries heavy evil connotations as well, making it even more uncommon in civilized society. It's also not something that evil NPCs and groups are likely to seek out, as there are more desirable options more readily available should someone wish to become an undead creature.

As Set stated, it could easily be the mcguffin at the end of a series of adventures.

I think it could be found in Nemet Noktoria (not sure if written right), that Darklands nation of Ghouls. They at least would have use for it.

Shadow Lodge

Slayers Guide to Undead had templates for all the common forms of undead.

If you're going for ghoul PC don't forget your Civilized Ghoulishness feat. (Has a CHA prerequisite, but the ghoul can pass for living. It's in Classic Horrors Revisited.)

Maybe you can convince your party to go lazurite hunting without telling them what it's for.

Use that feat along with the 3.5 gravetouched ghoul template.

Not really. the problem is that you become a basically mindless ravening monster. And evil as well. that last might be a problem in some campaigns.
