hit points for small / tiney creatures

Homebrew and House Rules

if a small or tiny creature is gaining hit dice through class levels how should the hitpoints be rolled.

If a Tiny Psudodragon is gaining levels in rogue or an Imp is gaining levels in fighter do thy roll the standard dice per level?

I looked at Psudodragons and noticed that the bestiary considers them a 2 Hit Dice creature using d12 per hit dice. this made me feel that the standard class hit dice is fair.

then I saw that Pixies which are only small get only d6 per hit dice. which seems to suggest that small/tiney creatures should get fewer hit points.

... then again there is no penalty to halflings and gnomes so I am confused again.

any one have any ideas on the matter?

Size has no impact on the HD. A Pixie Rogue gets the very same d8 hit die a Titan Rogue would receive.

The d6 racial hit die for Pixies is the racial hit die all Fey get (Satyrs, Nymphs, Pixies...)
Likewise all dragons get d12 hit dice, whether Pseudodragons, True Dragons, or whatnot.

The bonus (or penalty) comes with the CON score: the bigger a creature is, the likelier it has a higher CON score (which gives additional hit points per hd).

By the way, the same applies for precision damage dice: A Level 17 Pixie Rogue would deal the same 9d6 sneak attack as a Titan Rogue would. Their base weapon damage might be different, though...

It's based on their racial hit dice, Blue_the_Wolf. A Pseudo-dragon uses a d12 because it's using Dragon hit dice. A pixie is using a d6 because it's using Fey hit dice. A dire bear uses a d8, as does a tiny housecat, because they're using Animal hit dice.

If a creature gains class levels, it uses the hit dice associated with that class: d6, d8, d10, d12, as appropriate.

They also provide Base Attack and Saving Throw bonuses.

Creature hit dice also provide skill points and class skills. So an animal with 2 HD can support up to 2 ranks in a skill (like a 2nd level character can have 2 ranks in a skill), and has additional skill points (though animals typically only get 1 skill point per level due to Intelligence score).

For a complete list of racial hit dice, skill points, base attack and saving throw modifiers based on type, see Bestiary - Creature Types.

OK, I get it.

good stuff I appreciate it.

If i were to start leveling a creature... a psudodragon for example, would it start at character level 2 because its got 2 hit dice or character level 1 because its a CR1 creature.

In other words when counting class levels is it two levels of psudodragon + class levels?

I found playing a Pseudodragon that they were seriously over-rated on these boards as a playable race, You should have heard the hulaballoo when I floated the idea.

Frankly they are pretty weak at the low level, all they do well is try not to die. If you make them sit two levels behind the party you will find they get dominated pretty quick.

hah. yea they are probably weak. I am trying to befriend a psudodragon in game and plan to take leadership at level 7 in order to take on the psudodragon as a cohort. I will level him as a rogue with a few defensive rogue tallent spells and great skill in perception, stealth and dissable device.

his biggest job in party will be finding and dissabling traps (we have no other rogue) and the occasional strategic attack such as sneak attacking a caster or stealing small items from a table
