Hi there, this is my first post so if its in the wrong place then i do appologise!!
So, me and my gf are both super geeky and she has currently gone back home to the US for a bit. Since we usually like to play computer games together in person we thought it might be fun to try out a "pen and paper" rpg over the net while she's away.
We're not looking to play uber seriously, more just enjoy having a laugh. Can anyone recommend any good online resources for playing? maybe some kinda chat client with features for role playing (like a dice roller or a map or somthing?). Or even some separate dice rolling programme or anything at all you have found useful in the past.
Also we're probably going to operate it by me being the GM and also RPing a mainish character that will accompany her through the game. Which means i'll be taking a double wammy of learning to GM and be a PC all at once (quite a challenge but i feel up to it!). Although we have discussed the possibility of joining an ongoing online game with another group if we can find one, so if anyone knows a good place to go in search of an online campaign for pathfinder i'd really appreciate it!
Ta much!

Also, check out hamete virtual dice server if you just want die-rolling and chat only. It has the virtue of simplicity. :)

Thankyou both for your input. We have started playing without a VTT provisionally and we may opt to plump for one later. At the moment i'm keeping track of combat on my end using the paper mini's in the beginer's box (godsend!) and i've given them all a free action "look around".
This is working so far although we havn't had any truely complicated combat yet. (largest fight so far has been the 5strong party and 12nps's... that was managable).
Actually this has led to some interesting things like in the fight mentioned i got the party to role perception checks and used the average amount for how much detail regards numbers to use when they looked. So "tiff is attacking 3bandits" became "tiff is srounded by a small gorup of bandets (3-5)". Strangely the party found the vaugness compelling... go figure!
Sweeper, we've found this dice roller thats a little simpler to use, just in case you wanna switch - http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm
I've been thinking of getting nbos' the keep to manage campeign info (my notebook is getting cluttered!). has anyone used this? http://www.nbos.com/products/keep/keep.htm
Also since my players are not the most tech savy group their VTT seems like a good option as all the players have to do is log in through a web browser, has anyone used screen monkey? http://www.nbos.com/products/screenmonkey/screenmonkey.htm

oh one thing - the RP focoused players of the group (2/4 of them), seem to be more satisfied with combat that forces them to interact with me the same way they do outside of combat. a bit of our game from memory...
Grismond - I look around
you survay the battle feild, one or two bandets already lie dead or dieing but you are still heavily outnumbered. Tiff is surounded by a small group of bandits (3-5). Xifang is somewhere behind you preparing a spell. The rest are either fighting estelle or caught in her magic vines.
Grismond - How's tiff doing?
She seems to be struggling and you think she's just recieved a slash to the midsection.
Grismond i go help her.
-end turn-
but can i keep that up in the truely complicated battles? i donno...

If you're looking for a virtual notebook option for building your game world, give Obsidian Portal a try. http://www.obsidianportal.com/
I've been on there almost a year and it's quite handy. Because it's organized as a wiki, you can also get your players to come up with background, items, NPCs, etc. A nice way of seeing what they want to experience in game.
