Mithral Armoured Kilt?

Rules Questions

Sovereign Court

Hi there,

I was just wondering if making an armoured kilt from mithral would negate the increased weight it creates when wearing it with other armour, or the -1 max dex it gives in that situation also?

Here's the write up:
Armored Kilt: Popular among the Keleshite soldiers of
Qadira, the armored kilt is made of a thick cloth skirt with
bars of steel hanging down from the waist and a ring of
horizontal steel plates just above the hem. An armored kilt
can be worn separately as light armor, or it can be added to
other suits of light or medium armor. Adding an armored
kilt increases a suit of armor’s armor bonus by +1, but it adds
15 pounds to the armor, lowers the maximum Dex bonus by
1, and increases the armor’s weight category (from light to
medium and from medium to heavy). Adding an armored kilt
to heavy armor does not provide an armor bonus increase.

I would say that it overcomes the dex penalty but doesn't reduce the weight category unless both items are mithril. You're still adding weight to something that wasn't designed to accommodate it.

Keep in mind that light & medium armor focus mainly/explicitly on the torso, while heavy armor is a whole body thing. That's why the kilt doesn't work on a set of heavy armor.

That explains a lot! I hadn't actually thought of it like that, but it really does explain why it doesn't help heavy armour. I think I like it even more now. I was going to wear it with mithal chain shirt or leaf armour (which I'd say is very light too...) so it should be good.

Can it also be enchanted?

I don't think I would remove the max dex reduction for the kilt. As I see it, the mithral bonus applies to the entire suit of armor, and only grant +1 dex on the whole. The kilt modifies the max dex bonus of the other armor, and as such don't have a max dex, which is affected by being mithral.

Maybe it just comes from my dislike of the armored kilt (which is mainly to the fact that it negates the need for bracers of armor for arcane spellcasters since it got no spell failure).

I have to say I just like the idea of armour coming in pieces, it's nice. But either way; can a kilt be enchanted? I'd say no if it's being used with regular armour...

I agree.

While it can be enchanted, the bonus that the kilt grants to another armor shouldn't be affected by the enhancement bonus.
