Assuming I've used the heirloom weapon trait to get a sword that I am normally notproficient in but am for that specific weapon, and then spend the cash for the upgrade to is it considered to be the same weapon or a new one?

What if I've chosen a +1 to Attacks of Opportunity for that weapon, does upgrading to make it the same weapon? Does it retain the trait bonuses?

There is a spell that changes normal to MW - can it be assumed that by paying that price the becomes MW just as much as it could be assumed that a weaponsmith worked on it.

There is no official ruling on this as far as I am aware, at this time.

So, by the rules, the casting of the MW spell, does not last past the session it is cast as per the rule of all permanent and immediate effects end at the end of a session.

Additionally, by the rules, you cannot upgrade a normal weapon to masterwork. So it would therefore, not be your heirloom weapon.

I've FAQ'd this so we could get some sort of an official answer.

Thanks. Appreciated

If the weapon in question was a Wizards spell focus (ie MW) does that work? Its a wierd one and despite hoping for a 'Yes' I think it may well be a 'no' based on the reading of the trait as it stands - its a normal weapon. The wizard spell focus thing says that any weapon chosen is MW... so can it be the same weapon? Toughie. Leaning towards 'no' - hoping for a 'yes'.

Lets see what the FAQ returns.

This question has also been asked. If I am not mistaken, there also was no official response to it. But you may want to search these forums for that thread and see if you can find an answer or not. I believe the thread has Heirloom Weapon in the title and it was from pre Gen Con.

To answer your question, I would say that you could make your Wizard’s bonded item your Heirloom weapon.

Dark Archive

If it's not PFS, yes. If it is, there is no way to currently make an heirloom weapon permanently masterworked.

If it's not PFS, you can have a cleric cast the spell that turns a normal weapon into masterwork. However use of that spell in PFS is not allowed by campaign rules.

You are correct when the casting a spell or what not. But when it is based on character creation and you have a bonded weapon that makes the weapon masterwork, and you choose your heirloom weapon to be your bonded weapon, then it certainly can be legal in PFS unless specifically stated otherwise.
