Pre-generated Characters

Advice

I've read multiple threads on this but still have some lingering questions.

When is this a good idea? What are the benefits?

What Race would be best? (I've thought about Drow and Dhampir)*I am thinking this is more a storyline issue than a what works best issue*

What happens in a group of 6 players, who are also as experienced as I am DMing and playing?

If one Race is not the answer, would making the pre-gens out of different races be an option?

I have decided on a Stat line of 16, 14, 12, 12, 10 and 10

My goal is to be as balanced as possible with the results, staying away from anything over an 18 (heck if 16 was the highest score, that would be great too)

Thanks for any advice or even criticism.

I stay away from pre-generate characters for two reasons:
1) When showing new players how to play, helping them make their first character is the best way to explain the mechanics (in my experience).
2) Making your own character is a hallmark of tabletop RPGs I feel players should always be given the option to play what they invent.

I would ONLY use pre-generated characters if we were REALLY pressed for time, or a player requested it from me specifically.

Both are valid points.

Would it be easier to say then that the story is based off of this, here is the race you can play and here are the classes that are open?

Is that just as restrictive? Yes I know DM has last say, but in the case with pre-gen it seems to not give space for players to invent.

My goal is for them to enjoy and develop their PCs (no matter if they are pre-gen, or created per a set of guidelines)

Playing the "We are Goblin's" mod is what got me to thinking and looking at pre-gen

Hmmm if the story is based off the PCs race I would make sure that everyone is on board to play what you're playing first. That way if anyone has a problem playing a goblin, they could let you know, or if the campaign is not what the group is after you could get some opinions on what you guys DO want to play.

We always talk about ideas and interesting races or story ideas, which was another thing that got me to thinking.

In the end you are right about what they do want to play (which is why I have the alternate if say Drow or pre-gen does not go over) best thing is, the story does not really change (minor details really).

Sounds like a solid plan to me. Hope you guys have fun!
