Oathbow

Rules Questions

Does anyone know what materials are needed to make an oathbow? How many hit points does it have before and after you swear an oath to it. And lastly, how much damage can it take before it gains broken condition. Thanks for your help..

Um, gold? I envisage a composite construction including two rare timbers - one pale and very supple, maybe willingly given from a dryad's tree, one a dark, hard thorn-wood - significant use of bone, and elf-women's hair and unicorn's mane both as the string and part of the stave.

A +2 longbow has hardness 9 and 25 hit points. A +5 longbow has hardness 15 and 55 hit points. Either one becomes broken when it loses more than half its hit points (or, to put it another way, if it has less than half its hit points remaining).

The same damage remains when the wielder swears or completes an oath, so it seems highly possible that if he swears the oath, takes enough damage to make the bow broken, then either runs out of effect duration or kills his enemy, the damage will immediately destroy the item.

Other approaches might be to treat it as a +2 bow all the time, to reverse-engineer its cost to guess an equivalent bonus (thus, statistics as a +3 weapon) or even to maintain different hit point totals with respect to its target and everyone else.
