Aiding attacks being able to be used at ranged?

Homebrew and House Rules

Hey guys, wondering if anyone could point out a major flaw with this, but it seems to make sense to me.

RAW aiding another with the attack action is a melee only affair, but how "broken" do you guys think it would be if it could be used at ranged, with other ranged attacks.

i.e. 2 Archers aid a third, granting a +4 for the arrow to connect and do damage. I feel that this simulates a volley of arrows striking something vital as a hail rains down upon the target, maybe could roll a die to determine which arrow hit and did the damage if there were different amounts available.

Another point to just stress, no mixing and matching, meaning: No melee aiding a ranged and vice versa, seems that would be too much of a hassle and also since you are taking the time to not hit your friend in melee with a bolt to the back your missing out on the raw "multi-missle" effect that is the volley.

So if you guys have any questions, or could point out a gaping flaw in allowing this, I'd love to hear it!

If you like it, do it!

As a GM, I wouldn't do it in my own game. Its a low-risk deal to ranged characters to do it while getting your heiney up on the front line so that your buddy can have a +2 carries quite a lot of of risk. I don't see the ranged characters needing this sort of support and the front-liners don't need yet one more pita to ruin their already difficult days.

That 'look & feel' argument carries less weight as a player so, if my GM suggested it, I don't think I would resist much but I would offer that I think its a melee only affair as combatants in melee are doing a lot more interacting than the one die roll really indicates. As a result, it becomes easy envision one character maneuvering to give a close ally an advantage.

The interaction between the shooter and the target lasts only as long as that one projectile flies between them. In fact, the shooter really can't guarantee how the target might attempt evading that one, lonely attack. It ends up more difficult to envision how one ranged combatant can actually provide the bonus to another.

I wouldn't feel the game is broken by allowing it, though.
