On 3.0 Web Enhancements, High Level Wizards and Scribing Costs

3.5/d20/OGL

Hey, I'm back again. I've just stumbled apon this here old Tome and Blood Web Enhancement during my hours of rampant procrasti-...er, during my day off.

It has a wonderful table for filling out a starting wizards spellbook and some prebuilt spell books as icing on the cake.

Quick question for you 3.0 vets. Would this spellbook table be up to date with Pathfinder? Have there been any sweeping changes in the scribing system or the class itself before I save this somewhere?

-sly bump-

I wasn't quite sure where to put this. Perhaps this is in the wrong place?

I realize it's likely got more to do with the time-zone but I wouldn't mind seeing this bumped over to General Discussion.

It probably has more to do with people no longer remembering how the 3.0 rules worked. However, from a brief glance at the web enhancement, it seems that scribing costs were higher in 3.0 than they are in Pathfinder. Here's a list of costs to write a spell into your spellbook by spell level:

PRD wrote:

Spell Level Writing Cost
0 5 gp
1 10 gp
2 40 gp
3 90 gp
4 160 gp
5 250 gp
6 360 gp
7 490 gp
8 640 gp
9 810 gp

The cost of purchasing a scroll appear to be exactly the same in that web enhancement as they are in Pathfinder.

Thanks for the help, mate. You may just have single handedly opened up the wizard class for me. I've always sworn off of them for the headache making a spellbook was. Cheers!

The spellbook is only as much headache as you allow it to be. For example, the number of pages in a book, and when you need the next physical book for the collection that is usually referred to as "the spellbook" never came up in our games. And sure, it is one of those papery things that aren't too fond of water and fire, but we just assume that the wizard takes some precautions - just like we assume that the fighter will sharpen and oil his blade and polish his armour. This stuff is just too boring to bring up in regular RPG conversation, so we keep it out.

Plus, all that is not very expensive, so why not just handwave it?

The only thing you need to know beyond that you get all 0-level spells, 3+int 1st-level spells on 1st wizard level, and then 2 extra spells of any level you can cast on each further wizard level is that it takes spelllevel² * 10gp and spellevel * 1 hour to add to those freebies.

Just as an aside. I have always found the Collegiate wizard feat from Complete Arcane to be very useful. It allows the caster to double the spells IN HIS BOOK at no extra cost. For example when a wizard achieves 3rd level he normally learns 2 second level spells but with the above mentioned feat he can add a total of 4 second level spells at no cost.

To me it helps stop the wizard from incurring unnecessary costs on his spellbook.

I hope you enjoy the wizard class and remember being a blaster caster is fun but the PSIon will out perform you in that role, the wizards strength is his versatility, fire, ice, sound and everything else is available to you.
If you DM allows it, which they should according to RAW, check out the negative energy ray and the negative energy wave from Tome & Blood(3rd ed source book) they can be very helpful against creatures resistance to standard energy types.
Hope this helps, Good Gaming to you.
