Svetlana Leveton

Kingmaker

Ok, just curious, did anyone have a PC try to woo Svetlana? The player knows she's married, but wants to try it anyways. I figured I'd at least give him a roll for it. Do the Leveton's have a huge part to play in the upcoming adventures? Some drama would be fun to add to the game I think and he's going to try and keep it secret for a while.

I figured it was like this rather than handwaving it,
Svetlana Helpful DC0
Affair +10
Charisma +4 (says she's attractive)
He's a barbarian +2 (sounds like she likes civilization)
Just saved her life -5

DC11 seems about right to me...at least temporarily

DC11 sounds very low. Thats basicly saying he has a 50% of convincing her to have an affair.

The AP leaves it very much up to you what to do with any of the NPCs later.

I would drag this out and deal with it without rolls, personally.

Definitely seems too easy. Unless she's really unhappy married to Oleg and not terribly committed to her wedding vows. I agree much of this seems like it should be handled with out dice. You should also make some decisions about Oleg and Svetlana and their personalities. If Svetlana is happily married and committed to her vows then i'd think a series of DC 25 checks would be reasonable. But I might be a bit of a hard ass. Mechanically I also seem to recall that diplomacy can be modified based on how the action potentially affects the character. Maybe I'm thinking of charm person. I also think rp trumps diplomacy rolls sometimes. This mostly applies with the fanatically devoted characters who simply can't be convinced to go down a certain path of actions. Either that or the ideas are so abhorrent to character in question that the normal DC is adjusted up so it isn't impossible, just very very hard.

As far as I can tell they are an odd couple and living in the wilderness is a strain on Svetlana. I think the DC may be a bit low and I do like to leave it up to chance, even if there is great roleplaying involved for a chaos factor. In the end, the characters aren't fully fleshed out and since the PC is playing a barbarian his diplomacy says he won't ever make a 25, not anytime soon, I figured it'd be a 50/50 if he wanted to try especially after some kind of traumatic experience to shake things up. If he fails, I'd have her become distant and evasive, if he passes, she's at least open to the idea and there will be more rolling in the coming months.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In our game, as with most others presented here i think, Svetlana and Oleg became members of the ruling council as councilors for trade and town, for which they are the perfect (and only available) canditates.

As for the DC: theirs is propably not a marriage founded on true love,
more of convenience ( the mail-order-bride-sceem was mentioned in our game, too), but Olegs a decent guy with a steady income and property of his own and they make a good team. She´ll never leave him.
DC 20, at least, for a fling,
DC 15 for a thorough kiss, for DC 11 i´d say he gets a nice flirt and a chaste thank-you-kiss on the cheek. Barbarian, indeed!
DC 25 Running away with him into the wilds and adventure.
She won´t fall for empty words, shiny steel and blood-shot eyes;).

That seems sensible to me.

Now I start my long term planning to get one of my player's who wants to be king married to an Issian noblewoman, preferably a Surtova, lol.

I have this feeling my game is going to turn into True Blood, minus the vampires.

I recommend downloading the Jade Regent Player's Guide (free download) which contains rules for romancing characters.

Oh, given those guidelines, the DCs are waaaaay too low, especially given that she's married.

Seconded!

I think theirs is a marriage of convenience. It does seem she followed him into the wild.

And she tasks the explorers with finding special radishes for his favourite meal and will pay them royally, just to lighten him up.

So with that in mind, I'd say it would be at least a 20, maybe higher, and probably more than one roll to get her to to cheat on her husband. And if the roll fails by too much, Svetlana - and probably Oleg - will not be too fond of them.

And it doesn't matter that he barbarian without diplomacy has little to no chance to succeed. If he wants to be the great seducer, he need charm. If charming/charismatic isn't what his character is like, he's simply not cut out for this.

The halfling wizard doesn't whine about how he can't arm-wrestle the Tarrasque.

I mean, if everything is tailored to the characters' abilities, why have abilities at all? Just let them roll a regular die, and when they roll 4 or better they succeed.

String It along.

Start with a DC 20.

If the character succeeds decrease the DC by one on future rolls. If the character fails then increase the DC on future rolls.
If brought down to a DC 5 Svetlana succumbs to her primal urges.
If brought down to a DC 10 there is some kissing and heavy petting.
If brought down to a DC 15 maybe an awkward kiss.

If brought up to a 25 she scolds the character for his advances.
If brought up to a 30 she threatens to tell Oleg.
If brought up to a 35 she tells Oleg.

Liberty's Edge

The art of Svetlana makes her look so soft and cute, and there are sooo few women in the first adventure if you don't add in your own, it is almost like the module is daring a PC to seduce a married woman. :)

In our game, Oleg is gruff and grumpy, but clearly adores his "Lana." Svetlana is younger than Oleg, and was very excited when the PCs came around with their exciting stories of adventure. I pretty much leave it open that any character could potentially become friends or lovers with a PC, if they feel like putting effort towards it, but obviously some cases are going to be more challenging than others.

Jade Regent does have some very solid rules for romance, but good old-fashioned RP could do the trick, too. Let us know what comes of this...and how Oleg takes it if/when he finds out!

For the record, the closest it came in my game is that the party alchemist, Kalen, who gets a crush on virtually every female character, and some of the male ones, predictably crushed on Svetlana, too. He cooked dinner with her a few times, and once, when he was sick (stat damage from something or other), she took care of him herself, cool rags and gentle caresses and whatnot. I made it clear that she was always very happy to see him, but he ultimately decided to not disrupt her marriage.

Any adventurer who takes on a job exploring empty wilderness and expects the hot chicks will stand in line to be seduced by him needs to get his head examined. It seems that an orcish warsword has been lodged in it for some time. :P

He seems in serious need of religious succour. Tell him to seek the nearest temple of Calistria and tell'em I sent him.

Shadow Lodge

IMC Svetlana is a widow and doesn't even know it yet. Oleg was murdered by a Skinstealer, an agent of Nyrissa, to infiltrate the PC's kingdom and be in a position of power from which to cause problems for them (Oleg is the Kingdom treasurer). Thus far he has not been discovered, as he is being cautious, but down the road he'll grow to become more bold and the margin for his discovery will widen.

Silver Crusade

Perhaps the Relationship rules in the new Jade Regent players guide might be helpful.

you have something called a "relationship score" with a NPC. The relationship score is based on 1) your charisma modifier, +2) Campaign trait (+4), 3)Companionship every time you gain an experience level your relation ship score increases by 1 point, + giving gifts or delivering insults for rivals ( diplomacy check vs relationship score) +1 point, and there are special events in the adventure path ( in this case Jade Regent) which allow you to increase your relationship score.

Relationship score relationship level

5 or less

Relationship level: association

You and NPC know each other but not well

6-11

Relationship level: Friendship/competition

Good friend /known competitor 400 xp

12-30

Relationship level: Fellowship/ Rivalry

Deep mutual admiration / competition

+1 moral bonus on Cha skill checks
1,200 xp

31+
Relationship level: Devotion/ enmity

Your campaign trait bonus doubles
3,200xp

Romance: not all groups are comfortable with a romance, consult GM. Each significant NPC has a Romance score known to the GM. The romance scores i have seen are 40,38,35 and 32

In order to start a romance your relationship score must exceed the romance score. Once per level you may make a sense motive check DC=NPC romance score to "sense" if NPC is interested in a romance. Then you need to make a diplomacy check DC =10+NPC level +NPC cha mod)
your romance ends if your relationship ever drops below the NPCs relationship score.

This might give you something to work with.

Heh if only it were that easy :D

Let me guess: And Svetlana has been a skinstealer since shortly after their marriage. One day soon one of the "couple" will kill the other, the victim will revert to its true shape, and the murderer will feel a right fool for killing a fellow shapeshifter!

Um, no. Svetlana has been secretly studying witchcraft and has had the Cult of Gyronna whispering in her ear ever sine 'Foleg' has been sleeping around on her, slowly twisting her into one of their own.

Um, no.

Shame.

Just for anyone who is curious, my player spent an action point and ended up with a whopping 24 on the roll. I'm going to let the attempt at romance commence!

Play Oblivion much? :)

Joking aside, for the dedicated skills-loving player, this doesn't sound half bad.

Though I would adjust the bonus penalty based on his roleplay. If he's Billy Dee Williams cool, the DC should fall by more than one. If he fails after saying "hey baby, wanna knock boots?", the difficulty should rise by more than one, maybe even prohibitively so. Give him XP for roleplaying a dumb barbarian to the hilt and move on...
