This occurred to me while watching Avatar. Yes, it does indicate my inherent geekdom......
Avatar 2, sequel cut scene to an Earth military office. A grizzled officer sits at his desk. After a crisp knock; a young cadet is ushered into the room by an enlisted sailor.
"Well son, your latest results have been impressive, very impressive. However Command is thinking of giving you a break from Fleet exercises."
"Sir? My results are excellent, while some fatigue is present I feel my mental capacities are unaffected! Sir!"
"Yes, Yes Cadet but this new series of exercises will train you in some classic colonial anti-insurgency operations. The premise is that xeno-natives are interfering with our mining Unobtainium for our Fleet Ansibles. Your goal is to rectify that situation"
"Yes Commander Rackham"
"That will be all Cadet Wigggin"
I am not saying that the Navi are in trouble,Ender excels at lateral thinking and problem solving but...... I would expect the unobtainium to be mined

Okay, given the logistics of how the space flight works...
Now that Mining Base 1 is effectively in the hands/paws of the Natives.
How is a 'Relief Force' even expected to operate, let alone have the fuel/energy to boost back out of orbit and return home? Since that was the secondary function of Mining Base 1?
Unless the next Terran ship is on a magnitude of scale larger than the first ship we were introduced to.
*Note While typing this I realize that the very first ship to arrive at Pandora must have actually been just such a ship...hence I suppose a converted (Originally dedicated to) space exploration ship is the answer.

I agree the "Relief Force" will lack a base of operations, but we are talking "Unobtainium" here! This stuff is so valuable it is called........again>>>"Unobtainium". If Earth needs it to finish the "Buggers" off then I would expect the resources would be made available. Nuking would work however maybe a few canisters of C7?? would be less messy [dont remember my Aliens too well]

Or maybe the military could try war machines that don't have glass cockpits against the bow and arrow wielding natives. Seriously. A competent military commander with today's technology could beat the natives. Quickly. Without resorting to nukes. With ridiculously minimal to no losses.
Fun to watch, yes. A model of how things would really work, not even close.

Actually, the gun toting bad guys in Avatar 1 never struck me as actual, professional, 'Some countries' military force.
I always thought of them as over gunned security who, though they might be ex-military, are now working in the 'Security Industry'. This also makes more sense to me as to why all their machines have huge windows. They are just up gunned civilian machines of whatever type, cargo loader, short hop helicopter transport (Akin to the old 'Bell M.A.S.H. type helicopter).

The down side is that in a movie world a modern military commander is going to be run over by the Ewok/Vietnam syndrome/trope every time. (-_-)
