Polymorph Any Object clarification

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I am currently planning to take a game into the higher echelon of power and have been looking over options at higher levels to make sure I am prepared. During my perusal I found this fantastic appearing spell. However, at second thought it does not seem to work for what I was really hoping.

I was looking to transform a paladin into a movanic deva(angel), but it seems the paladin only gains flight and darkvision. Which is rather underwhelming. I was hoping others could explain how the spell works with the new polymorph rules.

Also at most it's permanent not instant. Meaning it can be dispelled.

Exactly, it appears to be a permanent (permanency) alter self with restrictions(must meet certain criteria to become permanent) and no GP cost. For an 8th level spell this is fairly terrible. I want to turn the paladin into an actual angel (it really fits his story and would be a great reward for all the RP he has done). I have made up crazy stuff before with loose base in the rules, but prefer to avoid that sort of thing when possible.

I was hoping for a trade of some of the paladins abilities and gaining the powers of the angel. I could obviously make up a similar spell and just change the paladin into a movanic deva with some paladin levels as though using the monstrous PC rules to build a deva with paladin levels.

Such a thing is best left in the realm of fiat. Talk with your DM, tell him you're willing to spend levels on gaining those abilities, and offer ideas of how it could happen. Then the DM simply slips an opportunity into the game session and, if you take it, crazy awesome happens.

Most likely this will involve your character dying (temporarily, of course).

Polymorph any object really is not appropriate for what you are wanting. Just like Stabbity said, this is something that will require work with the GM. A spell alone won't really do what you want.

I just wrote an amazing reply which would have lead you all to tears and exclamations of joy...or I b*&%@ed about polymorph being very underwhelming...and the inter-webs ate it.

In short I would like to see more of the amazing transformation return to the polymorph spells and keep the balance of power. An 8th level spell with a one hour cast time which actually changes you into another creature would be fantastic. Considering I could have spent my time creating my own plane it seems appropriate (and doesn't make DMs cry as they have to rebuild CR 17+ monsters mid combat).

On a related topic I have this image of a high level mage polymorphing rowboats into warships and selling them through black-market channels to an enemy country. Should that country ever attack with said warships the mage can just fly around dispelling his own magic to turn said warships back into rowboats. lol. All the cannons and gear and personnel would find themselves piled on a rowboat which would most likely just sink. Summon a few abyssal sharks and/or squids and you just won that battle.
