The D20 Crit die.

Gamer Life General Discussion

I recently saw an advertisement for a D20 that lights up when you roll a 20. The die is roughly $10. What I want to know is, how the hell do you change the batteries and is it easy to do?

Does anyone have one of these? See the link below.

I have one, the seem is glued shut which makes me think it isn't meant to be opened. I have had it a while and it is going strong, I figure since the light is an led and it doesn't go off often the battery won't run out for years.

I have one as well, I use it as my DMing die.

Like the previous poster, I don't think it is meant to be opened but will probably go strong for quite a few years.

Even when it dies though, a giant red die is a great DMs, rolling in the open die.

I can only see it working best with these.

I don't think that is a great idea as the battery will not last forever. $10 for a single die is a lot of money. If you roll behind a screen and play in the dark area the player might be able to tell when you rolled a 20 if they see the light on the ceiling if they have good eyes or on the bottom of your chin. I also am not sure it is the most balanced die if it has leds how does it exactly roll as fairly.

Somehow I feel I know a few IT guys who've been using those.

I used to be an IT guy and I wish I'd had those.

My local PFS Venture Captain has one of those Crit Dice. When he GMs, he rolls attacks out in the open and the flashing lights really do add some drama/fun to the combats.

@doctor_wu: Regarding "revealing" a nat 20 due to the lights, he only uses that die when he's rolling in the open (mostly attack rolls or saves). He uses a regular d20 for anything that needs to be concealed. Regarding it rolling fairly, it's seemed fair in the sessions I've played with him. I've seen it flash, I've seen it roll 1s, I've seen plenty in between.

Good then...I have successfully brainwashed you.

Seriously, it's all good fun and overall it seems to be a fairly "average" die - no more or less so than some of the regular dice I use.

I have one of these too. It is a fun, silly thing that rolls pretty well but to me seems a little fragile. The seam of mine is already starting to split (I've only had it a few weeks and have used it maybe 30 times). I think I will roll it only in my dice rolling box from now on (I have been rolling it out on the table hoping for that '20' but I'm afraid it will break open at some point). Note that the seam split is *very* small but it is there.
