I've been reading the background of the iconics and was wondering as they all seem to be adventurers and common companions are they members of the pathfinder society or just normal adventurers?

None of thier backgrounds so much as mention the society, so I would guess no. I think they are hired by the society as mercenaries though (thats why they are at so many at tables of PFS events)

Nope; none of them are officially members of the Pathfinder Society. That's a choice we leave to the player who plays them.
I see, I'm happy with that because I was planning on having Valeros as a freelancer for the pathfinder society.
If Alain the "what's in it for me", Cavalier were a member, He'd definitely be Shadow Lodge.
Eh. That seems too shady, for him. I'd place him in Taldor. Fighting for the glory of Taldor for the glory of Alain!
Also some of the prewritten backstory for him (poke around in the blog posts or the wiki) has had him working for the Aspis Consortium at one point way back when. Could be fun to have some "inside knowledge" if you're working against them.
