Hello everyone,
How do you calculate the cost of crafting a staff when the material component costs of one of the staff's spells is variable?
For example, how much onyx would be needed for 50 charges of a staff that cast animate dead?
Similarly, would a staff that casts the restoration spell cost 50x 100gp (can't remove a permanent negative level)or 50x 1000 gp (can remove a permanent negative levels)?
Thanks

For animate dead it will depend of the caster level of the staff you build.
Minimum is 8th, but a staff of abjuration which contain Repulsion has a CL of 13.
So if your staff highest spell is Animate dead it would be cast at the 8th level of power. That mean you could animate 16 HD of undead with one casting and that you would need 400 GP of onyx.
400 gp for 50 uses = 20.000 gp in onyxes.
For restoration I would price it on the highest cost power, so 1.000 gp x 50.

I, as the Deity/GM would say no to a staff of miracles.
If it was allowed, by the same logic the builder would be paying the higher component cost as it can be used to produce the stronger effect.
Notice that new magic item creation is more an art than a science. Because it is possible to create something using the item creation rules it doesn't mean that it is a good idea to allow it in game.

So if,say, a 15th level caster used the animate dead staff (created at 8th level) would he animate 16HD or 30HD of undead? Is a higher level caster getting "virtual free onyxes" by using a staff with animate dead?
