Smith: Alchemist discovery chain, archetype, or class variant?

Homebrew and House Rules

My campaign features extraordinary materials as an important part of the world. I used to gather all special materials and templates from many sources, and now that I checked the alchemist, want to include magic forging to it. However, I don't know which route to take. I checked the goldfever alchemist archetype from rpg superstar, and was inspired a little by it.

So what do you recommend? just a series of discoveries? an archetype? or a whole variant class?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

Well what you need exactly would depend on what exactly do you want. From the base description I would guess an archetype, but if you wanted to focus on forging and magic or magic-like weapons and armor I would have to say a variant class, replacing some of the alchemists formulae for some that work on objects, that would be applied as a oils.
Regardless of wheter it's an archetype or alternate class, here are some ideas:
Changing Brew Potion for Craft Magic Weapons and Armor is a good idea. Remember to allow the meteallurgist to use his extracts as spells for the purposes of crafting.
Perhaps an ability that allows him to spend some unusual material to give his armor or weapon some temporary bonus, the bonus depends on the material, like mithril on the weapon makes it lighter so you can use one handed weapon as a light weapon or cold-iron on the armor gives some bonus against undead maybe making it solid against incorporeal enemies so they don't ignore your armor bonus. This could replace mutagen.
You would need abilities to replace swift alchemy, instant alchemy and persistent mutagen.
If you havve a list of special materials, can I suggest also making some discoveries to use these special materials to modify bombs and create some special poisons? Those would compliment well the archetype/alternate class.

Shadow Lodge

As another source of inspiration i would recommend you check out the artificer from the 3.5 eberron setting and the artificer from the book of secrets, a 3 rd party sorce book for pathfinder.
