Monk of the Empty Hand & Proficiency with not-weapons (also 2-handed weapons)

Is the Monk of the Empty Hand proficiency with improvised weapons? Or rather does he just not take penalties when using them?

Yes, I've seen this. (Will not go into how the last sentence makes me want to pound my head on my desk)

But that doesn't necessarily answer the question. Since Weapon Adept and Monk of the Empty Hand can overlap, can they synergize?
Additionally, does MotEH make "improvised weapon" a Monk weapon?

Another question: why do MotEH treat two-handed weapons as quarterstaves? Does that mean all two-handed weapons gain two ends in the hands of a MotEH? Can I hold a greatsword in the middle and use the pommel as a bludgeoning weapon and the other end as a slashing weapon?

Yeah you can hold the greatsword in the middle and bludgeon with the pommel...
But if you don't have feats to help improvise you take penalties
It's like Jackie chan wielding a ladder or chair

Seriously, could use some more input on this.

he takes no penalties.
it doesn't matter to him that its a +1 greatsword.
he just treats it as a +1 quarterstaff.

what throws me off on the entry, is the mention of shuriken with throwing things... if they're not proficient with any weapons, what does a shuriken count as for thrown weapons?

( and yes, it would have been much simpler to say they get catch off guard. especially since then they would have it to take any dependent feats at later levels... )

The question at hand is whether or not he treats it as a quarterstaff in all regards - including as a dual-ended weapon.

I am pretty sure they are proficient with shurikens and nothing else.

maybe in 3.5? i don't have the book with me. so can't check. was pretty sure the entry said they lose all weapon proficiencies and can only use improvised weapons, but don't take the -4 with improvised weapons.
