Rules Questions

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This came up as a fairly heated issue the last time I ran my group, and I'd like some kind of clarification. I can't find anything in the book, nor have I seen this referenced elsewhere (though my search-fu is teh weak). So, here's hoping.

I'm running "Expedition to Ravenloft", revamping it for Pathfinder rules. I only have 2 players, so I allowed them to make characters towards the end of the "suggested levels" for the adventure, assuming that they'd need the help. One of them, a self-proclaimed "rules rapist", promptly created a Cleric with the Glory & Sun Domains & took every Feat he could get his hands on that boosted his Channel ability. *sigh*

The party is finally approaching the Castle, and they're beginning to have to deal with critters with damage reduction. Thanks to the posts elsewhere in this forum, I have a better understanding of how it works, except for this: Say there's 1 vampire (say, I dunno...STRAHD) and there are 3 characters wailing on him. Does his DR apply to EVERY ATTACK INDIVIDUALLY he suffers that round, or is a TOTAL OF DAMAGE SUFFERED that round? I'm a proponent of the former (and since I'm the DM, nyeh!), but the rules rapist is insisting it's the latter. Neither of us can find canon rules that lean one way or the other. Help!

every attack.

"Some magic creatures have the supernatural ability to instantly heal damage from weapons or ignore blows altogether as though they were invulnerable.

The numerical part of a creature's damage reduction (or DR) is the amount of damage the creature ignores from normal attacks. Usually, a certain type of weapon can overcome this reduction (see Overcoming DR). This information is separated from the damage reduction number by a slash. For example, DR 5/magic means that a creature takes 5 less points of damage from all weapons that are not magic. If a dash follows the slash, then the damage reduction is effective against any attack that does not ignore damage reduction.

Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack, such as injury poison, a monk's stunning, and injury-based disease. Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains. Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact."

Just like Energy Resistance applies to every attack that does that energy type.

what he said. That's why DR values are so low.

Why does he insist this if he can't find rules that support his statement?

I've heard of rules lawyers but they support their claims. Rules rapist is new term.

It is every attack. The Barbarian clarifies this:
Damage Reduction (Ex)

At 7th level, a barbarian gains damage reduction. Subtract 1 from the damage the barbarian takes each time she is dealt damage from a weapon or a natural attack. At 10th level, and every three barbarian levels thereafter (13th, 16th, and 19th level), this damage reduction rises by 1 point. Damage reduction can reduce damage to 0 but not below 0.
