Presonally, I was never a big supporter of the Mystic Theurge. You may have a lot of spells, but you can only cast one per round anyway, and you are least one level behind the curve.
That said, I have been working on the worse MT combo and so far it is Bard/Ranger for core classes.
A Bard/Ranger/Mystic Theurge is pretty darn bad, I'll agree.
But a Bard/Ranger by itself is sweet! Favored Enemy + Inspire Courage/Competence? Dual wield whip and shortsword? Azten's feat chain? Lots of possibilities.

THe ability to heal, raise the dead, and have access to all the offensive spells of the cleric, many of which are really good, AND have all the power of a wizard is amazing.
The MT's combined heal-blast-control capabilities aren't any better than those of a witch
A moderate level MT should never ever run out of spells.
By the time an 11th-level cleric is out of 3rd-and-higher level spells to cast, an 11th-level Wiz3/Clr3/MT5 is, too. Of course, the MT's spells have been less effective, being of lower level and having been cast at lower level, only partially relieved by the fact that many have been wizard spells. And the cleric is much more effective at healing between combats without spells (thus conserving them) and is more durable (medium bab, medium armor, d8 hit points + favored class bonus instead of d6 without).
