So my buddy and I have been toying with the monk class using the new feats from the ultimate combat and I just read the feat Marid Style and the last sentence of the feat says "While using this style and Elemental Fist to deal cold damage, you gain a bonus on cold damage rolls equal to your Wisdom modifier, and your reach with your unarmed strike increases by 5 feet." and my friend keeps insisting that if the stance is active you gain the 5 feet of reach but I think it only activates when you use elemental fist while dealing cold damage. Can you help clarify this for us?
thanks in advanced

Conditional clause at the start appears to apply to whole sentence. You only get the increased reach while using the style and using elemental fist to deal cold damage.

I'd say that he gains reach at all times. After all, it is a stance, not an activated ability.
Also, note the location of the comma. It seems placed to indicate that the reach is another ability of the stance, rather than being specifically tied to Elemental Fist.
The problem with that tho is a feat called "lunge" already exists where you can attack with reach for a minus 2 to AC for a round if their was no bad side or restriction on the feat wouldn't it be OP compared to other feats since it also has other abilities added to it?

But it is all part of one sentence. Commas end clauses, not sentences. This is all one thought, introduced by it only triggering when using elemental fist. If it were a general function of the feat at large, it would get it's own sentence.
While using this style and Elemental Fist to deal cold damage, you gain a bonus on cold damage rolls equal to your Wisdom modifier, and your reach with your unarmed strike increases by 5 feet.
"While using this style and Elemental Fist to deal cold damage" (Conditional clause)
||
| modifies
|
|
|----->"you gain a bonus on cold damage rolls equal
| to your Wisdom modifier" (result clause)
|
|
|
|----->"your reach with your unarmed strike increases
by 5 feet." (another result clause)
The comma in this case is separating the two result clauses, which are both modified by the one conditional clause.
