The situation: a mid-level campaign that spends a lot of time traveling from plane to plane (usually at the whim of high level wizard Mac McGuffin). The party has reached the level where casting plane shift is starting to come into play. Here's the problem:
How do we know what plane we are currently on?
Most of the time we are told, but we've been lied to before, and might want to get back to where we were. Other than "discern location" on ourselves - which is too high level for regular use - I haven't found anything. We have considered leaving one behind as a "marker" but again it seems that Discern Location is the only divination spell that actually gives a plane.
So are there any spells or items a 10th level party would have access too that could tell the current plane?

DC 15 Knowledge: Planes check.
Page 101 of the CRB.
Sorry, probably should have been more specific. A lot of the time we end up on the private demiplane of evil wizard Plot McDevice. Recognizing that you're on (for example) the Astral Plane might be a DC 15, but the small, secret home of a wizard is a MUCH harder check. Well into the 30s or more.
