So, our group met today with two new players at the table. The new guys were just getting their toes back into playing RPGs while the rest of us had just finished a three-year campaign. As GM I wanted the old and new players to mesh quickly ("break the ice"), give everyone a chance to familiarize themselves with the rules (transitioning from 3.5) and get a flavor for what's to come before throwing them right into the AP. THIS WAS AWESOME! I highly recommend running this module before you start the Brinewall Legacy, even if your gaming group is well established. Took us about five hours, but that was with a string of REALLY terrible rolls during the final fight (just one miss after another, and hits only doing 1 or 2 points of damage).
Even with the bad rolls (and perhaps because of them) my players *loved* this and even the more reserved and stoic players were really getting into playing goblins, chanting their morbid rhymes, and really just hamming it up. I had everyone do the rhymes for their pregenerated characters at the beginning, but forgot to have them recite the group rhyme when they left the village. So, I just handed it out for them to read while I was drawing up the first battle map, and they spontaneously started the rhyme on their own. (I had a huge grin on my face; I was so proud of them.) They also got a taste of what was to come with Brinewall Legacy and, as we finished up, one of them said, "I hope we don't have to kill these guys when we play as the heroes." I just smiled and said, "I'm glad to hear that, but you're just going to have to find out."
I followed Clark's advice in another thread and ran this without warning my players except to say that before today's session they should be thinking about the movie Gremlins and maybe taking some time to watch it. I was a little afraid I'd have a small rebellion or irritated players, but they quickly got into it and at the end everyone said they were really glad we had done it.
I dare say it was one of the most enjoyable sessions I've had a DM or player in about year -- at one point I was laughing so hard, I had tears streaming down my face. A huge hit, I definitely recommend it for starting the Brinewall Legacy, and I hope Pathfinder does more of these little intro-modules for future APs.
