So I see that the new Lair Assault program is just about to kick off.
This actually looks pretty interesting to me. I'm not usually an 'in store' type player because I can't stand the weak role playing element but this might not be so bad. Kind of like playing a complex 4E based version of Descent.
Interested in the 'repeat if you all die' element.

It's also cool that they allow 'anything in CB.'
Too bad there isn't any store offering it within 250 km of where I live.

Feels a bit like doing the "boss fight" in a computer RPG, where you save your character beforehand and have a couple of goes (or more) at getting through a particularly tough encounter. I imagine it all depends on the quality of the actual encounter - could be great fun, or could be annoying. But in theory sounds like an interesting throw-away game.

Really? I'm getting far more of a tournament play vibe that you'd get in much older editions.
I mean, Mearls is a pretty big OD&D dude. Going for a tournament play old school style set is right up his alley.

I think "boss fight" is more accurate. They said that each session is essentially a single extended encounter (ie. one big fight). They will likely have other objectives and such built in besides just killing the monsters, but it pretty much seems intended for power gamers who want to build munchkin characters and who enjoy the tactical side of the game. I don't think it will have much to offer players with other interests.
