Hi everyone:
I'm writing an adventure in which an enemy 3rd level sorcerer (or wizard) and his six 1st level warrior lackeys break into a ship throug it's hull to try to steal something that the heroes have stashed inside.
It takes place in the high seas during thick fog. They approach the ship on a rowboat that they will use to escape with the swag.
The problem is that without gunpowder (my universe has none), and with only 3rd level, I can't find a convincing way for him to drill a hole big enough to fit a man through the ship's hull.
I've thought of tossing against it one or more potions of fireball the guy could have bought, but it doesn't convince me a lot.
I need something that get's the job done fast and I don't care if it's noisy or messy.
I would appreciate if you lended me a hand
Thank's in advance!

Well since it is a ship, I figure break would not affect it (as a ship is too large). However, if you have the minions hack at the hull for a round to break a portion, then cast break on that portion it should work. 6-12 seconds to break into a ship is not bad. Also, if any of the minions are strong enough, have them attempt to break it (rather than beat at it's hitpoints), with a STR check, DC 18. Then cast break.
Alternatively, if you go with the wizard he can cast 2nd level spells at 3rd level, and there are a good deal of fire spells at 2nd level that deal a good amount of damage and could probably burn open a section of the hull. Fire breath seems the best for that option, or flaming sphere.

Staff of Passage on it's last charge, perhaps? Stolen, of course, with an angry wizard who'll find it, expended, in the PC's possession...
Wood Shape is plausible.
