A question regarding attacking while flying.

Rules Questions

I am curious about whether Fly-by Attack needs to be taken for my flying Ftr/Cav to be able to attack another flying opponent. For example if the monster is flying and I want to attack, should I have the feat Fly-by Attack in order to do so?

When I read the description of Fly-by Attack it says:

This creature can make an attack before and after it moves while flying.
Prerequisite: Fly speed.
Benefit: When flying, the creature can take a move action and another standard action at any point during the move. The creature cannot take a second move action during a round when it makes a flyby attack.

Or do two flying opponents attack as if they were on the ground?

If you are flying in the air you may make an attack without any other feats.

If you are flying and want to attack a flying enemy the process will be similar to how you do it on the ground. Move into range and declare your attack.

The Fly-by Attack feat lets you move then perform an attack on the move, sort of like an aerial Spring Attack.

I was wondering if Fly-by Attack didn't work similar to Ride-by Attack. Letting you move, attack, and move again.

Yes, ride by attack is like a mounted Spring Attack - maybe that's just too confusing, eh?

Yes, Spring Attack, Ride by Attack and Fly Attack let you move, attack and move again.

Fly-by Attack is actually unique because it lets you perform a Standard Action, not just an attack.

Also, it does not protect you from AoOs the way Spring Attack and Ride-By Attack do.
