We know the Earth is finite, and at some point in our history
we will need to start thinking about traveling to other places in the universe.
Now is a good time!
I think America needs a new "space program" or technology program to
stimulate business development, and ultimately our economy.
If we can become ripe with ideas, and develop new technology to spawn
new industry, then we can train our citizens and put them to work. Peeps
will have jobs, and make money (again).
Ah, the future is so bright.

With all the b~%*@ing about gov't spending these day, and potential future cuts to the defense budget, I'm guessing this might be the best they thought it'd be safe to do.
Besides for a small group that might have a really awesome idea, this might be jsut the amount of money they need to get going, then get the attention of some private industry big spenders.
I guess I've become one of those folks who firmly believes that the space program is dead in the water without a lot more infusion of private industry, but also a helping heap of continued gov't interaction.

Research and exploration are exactly the kinds of things government is built to do. This is what we should be spending tax dollars on.
This is a turning point for humanity, make no mistake. Those who turn their back on space will go down in history along with the Chinese burning their Treasure Fleet. The future is beyond the bounds of Mother Earth. The only question is who goes, and if no one goes the question becomes when does the extinction cascade occur?

......when does the extinction cascade occur?
November 12, 2143. My sources tell me that's the date when the Kaleidoscopic Platypus Men from Dimension Zeegwob finally break through into our universe and cause every lost sock in the history of human civilization to suddenly reappear - each as the power source for high-tech explosive devices.
