Composite Bow Damage

Rules Questions

I am sure that I have missed this somewhere. If I have a STR of 16 and DEX 20, what is the damage modifier for the bow? I think I may have seen somewhere that says there is no modifier for the Composite Bow. Thank you.

The default composite longbow requires a Strength modifier of +0 or higher to use with proficiency. A composite longbow can be made with a high strength rating to take advantage of an above-average Strength score; this feature allows you to add your Strength bonus to damage, up to the maximum bonus indicated for the bow. Each point of Strength bonus granted by the bow adds 100 gp to its cost.

Thank you. I also see where it says that "If you have a Strength bonus, you can apply it to damage rolls when you use the composite longbow, but not with a regular longbow." page 147 CRB.

Thanks again.

Only composite bows allow you to use Str bonus, and only up to the allowable modifier of the bow.

If you have a 16 str and a composite (+2) bow, you only do 1d8+2 damage. If you have a 16 str and a composite (+4) bow, you take -2 to hit, and only do 1d8 (I think).

I'm pretty sure based on the quotations - specifically "up to the maximum bonus indicated for the bow" - means that you would deal 1d8+3 with the +4 bow.
