Winter witches with the Vengeance patron

The Winter Witch archetype from Inner Sea Magic has a limited list of patrons, including the Vengeance patron. The Vengeance patron gives the Burning Hands and Burning Eye spells, which have the Fire descriptor. The Winter Witch's "Ice Magic" ability makes her unable to "learn or cast" spells with the Fire descriptor.

How does this work? Does a Winter Witch with Vengeance learn no patron spells at 2nd and 4th levels? Does the witch learn the spells anyways, but cannot cast them, except perhaps with the Elemental Spell metamagic feat?

I would assume that they could learn the cold version of fire spells.

At a home game, this is how I'd solve it. By RAW? Not sure.

Then again, I allow people to learn any energy spell as any of the core 4 energy types (fire, cold, acid, electric) as though that was how the spell was supposed to work. These are treated as different spells, so (for example) a character who knows a non-fire version of fireball would need to learn the fire version separately.

Grand Lodge

Per RAW, I'd say the Winter Witch is screwed.

The way I would actually play it is allow those spells to be cast with cold versions instead of fire versions. I'd treat them as separate spells just like StabbityDoom suggested.

Heck even in a PFS game I would allow it. Only way to play it and make it make any sense.

Would "severe cold" be the appropriate condition to substitute for "on fire", then?

Dark Archive

Bumping this thread to try and get some sort of 'official' feedback; I ask because I actually would like to make a Winter Witch for PFS and cannot make the 'swaps' to Cold versions of the spells without some sort of documentation/errata.

just noticed the inconsistency myself. this was never addressed? even after they reprinted it for the Reign of Winter player's guide? come on!

( ps, i'm curious how they can add ray of frost to her spell list but not automatically learn the cantrip... that's typically verbage when they're expanding the spell list for spontaneous casters. does a winter witch really need to pay 5gp and learn a cantrip instead of just starting with it in her Familiar ? )

This was an oversight. Vengeance should be removed from the list of possible winter witch patrons.
