I can only take the Combat Trick rogue talent once...

but can I use another talent to take the Ninja Trick rogue talent... and select the Combat Trick ninja trick?

The funniest part is that I am asking about this for my Bard (Archaeologist).

Oh, UC...

I would say yes because your not taking the combat trick twice, your taking the combat trick and something that imitates the combat trick

I don't have UC, but if it helps, the "swashbuckler" rogue archetype (APG) lets you take the Combat Trick rogue talent twice. If that's all you're after, then there you go. You'll also get a free MWP out of it, along with (by the time you take four swashbuckler levels to get Combat Trick twice) a +1 to Acrobatics and on saves against fear.

Enduring Renewal + Ornithopter + Ashnod's Altar.

It happens with every expansionist game.

:)

I'm not sure about your build, nor do I own UC, so I could be wrong, but I believe ninja is a rogue archetype. As such, you wouldn't be able to take levels in both rogue and ninja, only one or the other.

If I'm right, this might have an impact on things. If not, my apologies.

Funny, the ninja version includes a clause that says you can't use the Ninja Trick "Rogue Talent" to take a Rogue Talent with the same name as a Ninja Trick you already have.

But the Rogue Talent "Ninja Trick" lacks that clause.

My head is sooooooooo far up my own ass right now. I'm almost through to the other side!

Negative, HA.

We're talking about the Rogue Talent and Ninja Trick, respectively, that let you take a Ninja Trick or a Rogue Talent, respectively.

I don't blame you for being confused. :)

Wow, I completely forgot about that. I seem to recall a developer stating somewhere that "alternate classes" (like the ninja or antipaladin) aren't separate enough to be able to take a level in both "versions" of the class.

No leveling involved, mates.

The character in question doesn't have a level of either class.

We're just talking about the rogue talent/ninja trick in this case.

I can't really explain it further without reposting the entire rule :/

As such I must respectfully ask people not to weigh in unless they can look the rule up in UC.

Ah, OK. That makes sense. I think?

I really need to pick up UC ...

Archaeologist Bard archetype, trades performance for rogue talents (among other things).

One rogue talent is "Ninja Trick", which I will now call "Fake Ninja Trick" to eliminate ambiguity.

There is a (real) Ninja Trick called "Rogue Talent" which I will now call "Fake Rogue Talent" to eliminate ambiguity.

Fake Rogue Talent specifies that you can't take a talent with the same name as a trick that you have already.

Fake Ninja Trick does not specify that, and therefore allows it implicitly.

So, pending someone else's superior analysis: you can take a rogue talent twice if it is also a ninja trick.

To make matters worse, the Fake Rogue Talent ninjatrick uses the word "Talent" instead of trick in the last clause,

UC wrote:
Rogue Talent: The ninja can select a rogue talent in place of a ninja trick. The ninja cannot select a rogue talent that has the same name as a ninja trick. The ninja can select this talent multiple times.

thereby granting the ninja the ability to select any rogue talent as many times as he likes.

The OP might be an erratum, but this is definitely an erratum.
