I am not sure what the rules say, but I would assume that any aura emanates from the creature, and don't count them in their range. So a 10-ft aura, is 10-ft from the creature in any direction.
Certain spells might diverge from this, but I generally think that this is the case.Compare it to an medium creature. The aura is centered at the creatures square, but does not count that square in the range.
