Quiggon Monk= Bender?

Conversions

Hey guys,

Normally I post a pretty optimal Build and get help with 'tweaks' here.
Unfortunately I'm pretty stumped on this one.

I wanna build a monk, who is a bender like the Chars from the avatar series.

I rarely play monks. When I have in the past I've pretty much stuck to Treantmonk's Guide (using Brass Knuckles, rather than an amulet of mighty fists).

Basic tactics were to close and then beat on the enemy getting extra attacks via Medusa's Wrath.

Pretty much identical to fighter tactics really...

So, like I said Bender type char for my next monk would rock. Ireckon Quiggon monk might be the best option (or maybe even staff magus)

How would you do it?

I am vaguely disappointed that you didn't mean Bender from Futurama.

Anyway! I think, if it was me (and not knowing a darn thing about the series), I'd go with something like a qinggong / monk of the four winds combo.

Monk of the Four Winds because it's very elemental focused (slash weird at later levels), and qinggong because, well, every monk should be a qinggong monk. :)

Dark Archive Bella Sara Charter Superscriber

Bite my shiny metal ass!

(sorry, it had to be said)

Staff Magus with Words of Power seems to work ideally here. Benders tend to have ridiculous amounts of versaility in terms of their chosen elemental schools.

Qiggong monk is interesting as an idea but I honestly couldn't say how it would work as far as fitting the concept goes.

Liberty's Edge

It depends on what aspect of the character concept is more important to you: the martial arts, or the elemental powers.

If it's the martial arts , go with qinggong/monk of the four winds. You'll have a capable warrior with a little elemental flourish.

If it's the elemental powers go wizard (elemental school)*, maybe with the Eschew Materials feat. Most spells have a somatic component, and for your character that can be represented by performing martial art katas.

Multiclassing might be your best option. You may lose out on some raw "damage per round" ability, but one or two levels of monk on a wizard would fit the concept nicely (a guy who can summon up the elements around him, but can handle his own in a fight, and evade those fireballs being tossed his way).

*Could also go sorcerer with an elemental bloodline, but I feel like wizard fits the concept better.

Yeah, I reckon Probably Staff Magus as well. I'll brush up on Works of Power and post a build later for comments.

BTW not sure why this was moved to conversions. I was after help with building a char inspired by the show. Not converting anything

The Magus idea sounds interesting. I may have to give this a look myself. Otherwise, the Quingong Monk doesn't fit the bill here; their spell-for-ki selection is boring and kind of random looking to me. Look to the Elemental Wizards for spell inspiration, because traditional energy damage won't cut it, as acid is never used, and fire and electricity are both fire techniques. Water uses ice sometimes but isn't necessarily defined by it. Earth is lots of battlefield manipulation, defense, and crushing damage; no acid.

I have never liked the correlation of acid and earth.

I've found that while the old Tome of Battle stuff (Crusader, Swordsage, and Warblade) were broken in 3.5, they play nicer in Pathfinder and serve as almost bending arts.

The Exchange

Psionic Telekinetics: The Avatar Benders look like they are all descended from the Avatar Lineage.

The Air Master archetype from The Genius Guide To Air Magic PDF from Super Genius Games is the closest attempt IMO to an Airbender from Avatar: The Last Airbender. As it tries to balance the abilities of a monk with those of a wizard from the Elemental Air School of magic in the Advanced Player's Guide. However, in order to make the archetype more like the Airbenders in the cartoon, I think, it needs the Silent Spell and Eschew Materials metamagic feats (sans the extension of the spell's casting time and the bumping of a specific spell to a higher spell slot)as bonus feats.

You might also consider taking monk in some capacity and mixing in some of the eldritch heritage feats.
