Super Easy Question RE: Base Attack Bonus

A. I see it on the Character sheet, but other than:

'Base Attack Bonus (BAB): Each creature has a base attack bonus and it represents its skill in combat. As a character gains levels or Hit Dice, his base attack bonus improves. When a creature's base attack bonus reaches +6, +11, or +16, he receives an additional attack in combat when he takes a full-attack action (which is one type of full-round action...)

I don't seem to find information on how to establish what it is... it kinda sounds like it's just your level.. but why have a number that is the same as your level? why not just say 'your level'?

anyway, the back of the book refers me to the page with that blurb on it, in Character Creation I don't find anything... but yet it is so essential, I feel that I am totally missing some big section on 'base attack bonus' or something.

Can some one help me a bit with some more detail? perhaps a page number that has more info on it or something?

and most of all, how do I determine what it is, and how to advance it as the characters level like, "add one point per level? 3 points? or what?

Thank you,

For a character, the BAB is determined by their class(es). Look at each class and you'll see on the table for that class an entry for base attack bonus. Now you know what it is! If you have multiple classes, add up the highest BAB for each class, then determine the iteratives from there.

It varies by class; you'll see it listed in the table for each class in their class description along with things like saving throws.

For a straight-classed fighter, barbarian, paladin, or ranger, BAB would be equivalent to level; for everyone else in core, it's something less.

If you have multiple classes, add the BAB values you have from your levels in each class to arrive at your total.

Each class has a table that defines when it gains feats etc. There is also a column that has the BAB progression.

Take a look at the core classes in the core rulebook at the fighter. At level 1 he has a +1 to all his attacks, not taking into account strength or dexterity modifiers. At level 6 he gets 2 attacks, the first attack at +6 and the second at +1. This continues in a linear fashion up till 20th level where a fighter has 4 attacks at +20/+15/+10/+5 (again not taking into account the strength or dexterity modifiers.

Each class will have a BAB progression, and it is not as simple to say that it is just the level that the character is at at the time.

Thanks all, I see now, it's separate for each Class with a nice shiny Table and everything.

I will say, that this is the first time that I actually got help by going back to a "most pop. rpg in da world' 3.5 ed book. It's glossary helped quite a bit, and the explanation it had on the 2 pages that the index referenced cleared it all up presto fine too... that's the first time that I found the 3.5 book to be better than the Pathfinder one.

Thanks again all for the helps. I also did the 'forum search' after I posted (always better to do it before hand me thinks... :-P )there was information there that helped me look at the class page again - not sure why I didn't see it earlier.

woops!
