Hey guys, hope you all are ok. I posted this question on 3.5 but i wanted your opinion on PF too.
In our last session we had a weird situation in which i would like your help with.
We have the following:
A large creature (here on creature)
A large PC (here on barbarian)
A medium PC (here on magus)
The creature hits the magus and attempts to grapple, which succeeds. The barbarian rolls an melee attack against the creature and scores a critical. Now here's the deal: its a critical hit against the creature, is there possibilities that it hits the magus or not? The creature is just a dire animal, therefore it doesn't have the intelligence to use somebody as a shield let's say, and the magus is one size category smaller than the creature so i don't see why the magus should have chances to be hit by the large barbarian.
Also take into account that the barbarian rolling damage scored 46 damage so if it hits his party member is bye bye for the magus since it has CON 18 and only 24 HP.

There's nothing in the rules, that I'm aware of, that suggests the Barbarian would have hit anything other than the creature. If the barbarian was targeting the creature, and hit the creature (critical or otherwise), then the creature is hit, not the magus. The fact that they're grappling doesn't even play into it.
The only way the magus could become the victim of "friendly fire" from single melee or ranged attacks is if the GM has a houserule for such consequences. There are area spell and effects (like fireballs and splash weapons), and similar attacks that could lead to a friendly fire incident. Even if there is a house rule for critical fumbles where an ally can be hit, I'd still say that a *critical hit* (which is extreme success) shouldn't hit anything other than the intended target.

For melee attacks both 3.5 and Pathfinder are the same. You don't risk hitting your friend.
Using ranged attacks into a grapple, Pathfinder there is no risk of accidentally hitting the wrong target. Under 3.5 rules, you " roll randomly to see which grappling combatant you strike." (With different size combatants, whether this was a 50/50 chance or some other random method based on relative size was never defined).
