I have to wonder... how exactly did Ameiko get to Varisia? Since the emperor is imprisoned and she is apparently in the succession perhaps her parents were forced to flee Minkai? If they were fleeing it might make sense to hide the ship by sailing it inland and scuttling it in an out of the way swamp infested with goblins and other dangerous creatures. A Tian ship scuttled in a swamp? Possibly loaded with Tian Fireworks which they had intended to use for trade?

From what I am guessing the Kaijitsu family came to Varisia a few generations ago (yes, probably crashing on shore thus the boat with fireworks ~ or that is a more recent ship that was sent to look for the missing branch of the imperial family). Since then there has been a dying off of the imperial family back in Minkai, such that they need the branch of one of the younger princes who weren't in line for the throne 50 or so years ago.
This gives the family time to lose its retainers (either through old age or because the children of the original retainers choose not to be) and it gives time for the branches of the family to spread out (like Amaya's family down is Westcrown).
Edit: If the family fleed Minkai (definitely possible) it would have been Ameiko's grandfather, because I think remember references to her grandfather building the Sandpoint Glassworks. But that could be wrong, trying to remember from when I ran Rise of the Runelords 4ish years ago.

That's all covered in great detail in Jade Regent. It's also all part of the unfolding plotline of the Adventure Path, so I'm not ready to spoil that here. Folks will just have to wait until Gen Con to find out how the Kaijitsus ended up in Sandpoint.
What I can say, though, is that they fled overland, over the Crown of the World. They didn't take a ship to get to Varisia, although once they got there...
... you'll have to wait and see!

I guess the winning side writes history. Hehe.
Although I am absolutely not on the "I love Asian themes in my campaign" side, I am really looking forward to this AP. The epic journey sounds better and better!
Maybe Ameiko has some sort of flash backs on her way back to Minkai, passing certain key points "in reverse" on her way there?
You know, sometimes the ancestors give their descendants some glimpses into past and future.
