Pathfinder PVP

Advice

Hey guys, as a special event my D&D group is going to be running a PVP session. Characters will be made fresh for the day, and the setup is 2v2, though we don't find out who our partners/opponents will be until the day. It will likely be running round robin tournament style.

Setup will mostly likely be 25 Point Buy with 2 traits, the source materials will be Core Rulebook, APG, Ultimate Magic and the 2 Beastiaries. We get to build one character each, and we'll be doing tournaments at level 5 and level 10.

So my question is, what build would people go for for the greatest chance of success? Prebuffing may or may not be allowed, and given the low level I'm not quite sure a Wizard is the best option.

Level 5 and level 10? A wizard who focuses on SoS effects is viable at those levels. They also do great as Battle Wizards, or as buffers of melee dudes.

Rangers do nasty, nasty damage, particularly if you know what race your opponent will be (or just take Ranger's Focus as a Guide). Take a druid as a buddy and you'll do fine.

Fighters are amazing at killing things, but work best in tandem with a caster (such as a cleric or wizard) who can help him hit consistently.

In fact, anything can do well. The question is really: how do you want to kill your foes?

My guess would be Paladin/Cleric.

Paladins have ridiculous amounts of damage output, plus they can heal themselves as a swift action.

PVP though is a difficult thing to run if the DM isn't prepared right. For example, if a rogue starts 5 ft from a barbarian, it's game over. Same rogue 30 feet away may stand a better chance. Or if there is places for the rogue to distract the bard and hide, etc. For a true PVP event to work, there needs to be some sort of random "spice" to the mix. IMO

But if you're going for the most likely to win builds, my guess would be some sort of beefed up Paladin/Cleric.

For level 5 I would recommend a dual Witch team with Slumber hex and beefed up Ini+Save DC and summoning abilities for the coup-de-grace.

For level 10 I would either take the same route but use two Wizards or I would use two Druids with great cat companions.

Sovereign Court

Have a Grappling Monk team up with... whoever.

Paladins are pretty awesome, but they can't smite enemies who aren't evil. It's likely that the enemies will be neutral, in my estimation.

Check this out. It is pvp for Pathfinder.

Who is best will depend on the details of the pvp game.

1. Is prebuffing allowed? IE are longer duration buffs allowed to be up before the fight. If they are, I would say go druid or synthesist summoner. A synthesist who is allowed to be in his fused form before the combat starts will be the strongest lvl 5 and 10 character. His saves will be superior and he should be nigh unhittable. A druid is well a druid and thus awesome(you have an animal companion, wild shape, good fort and will save, and full caster progression.)
2. Do the players start aware of each other? is there going to be a surprise round? If there is going to be a surprise round, I would say that you should go with a divination wizard. You will go first and get to always act in the surprise round.

Also if you had been allowed to pick both characters I was going to say that 1 should be a ferocious mount barbarian and 1 should be a synthesist or druid that you the barbarian would ride and give his rage and rage powers to. but since this is not the case :(

Hey - Just ran across this thread. I am the creator of the Conflict PVP system for pathfinder. I would love to host/GM a game for anyone interested online using a VTT.

BTW: conflict has a battlepoint system that evens the characters out before the match and a ton of scenarios to play.

Vistaris: Paladin/Cleric are nasty in pvp but beatable.

LMK.

I just picked up the conflict pvp rule book along with the pathfinder core rule book and advanced players guide. There are 6 people in our gaming group and none of us have ever play any tabletop role playing game. We play warmachine every weekend. I love the game but want to get into something a little deeper. None of them will play pathfinder because its to "nerdy". I can't get it through there heads that they are already nerds. Anyway, I have read most of the pathfinder rulebook and understand how the game works. But I also understand as the self elected GM I will also have to be very fluent in the rules and be a good story teller as well. I thought starting out with just pvp (no role playing) would be a good time for all of us. This is a very competitive group. Conflict has a very good set of rules for this. I would just like to see a game of conflict ran. Are there any videos of conflict being ran? If so please give me a link. I can't seem to find anything. Also sorry if I sound like a noob. It's because I am so take it easy on me. Thank you.
