Challange vs Smite Evil

Advice

Been talking to my DM about my new Ronin's challenge ability. I want to actually be able to use it to its fullest at least once in a while.

He says though that the secondary effect of my order is very minor, and that I have to pay a higher "price" compared to a paladins code of conduct. But because I can do (once per day) additional damage equal to my level to any creature I meet, that its perfectly fine on that.

I'm course trying to compare the ronins ability to other cav/samurai. But he is pretty steadfast on it being good enough as is to just allow me to do the damage for a challenge, and I fear he won't try putting in a couple of random cavaliers/samurai for me to fully use the ronin ability at least once in awhile.

He compares it to smite evil and only that smite evil works on evil and how many crazy bonuses the paladin gets for smiting an evil. But once I try comparing smite evil on not an evil to not getting the full benefit of the challenge, its now comparing apples and oranges he says.

What would a good comparison be?
