I understand what RSS feeds are, but I seem to have a deficiency figuring out how to use them.
Can someone give me a quick 101 class, or direct me to an online resource that explains in very simple terms how to use them?
As one of my favorite movie lines goes, "explain it to me like I'm a five year old."

In short form you need an RSS reader first. Depending on the computer/smartphone you are using I could see about finding you some suggestions.
If you are familiar with subscribing to Podcasts it works in a very simlar way. You copy the URL of the RSS feed you want and past it into whatever reader you are using. From then on every time the reader "looks for updates" it will check that RSS feed and any others in it's list for new entires.

iPhone iPad mac are my systems.
Reading your article.
Ok, so I got an rss feeder and tried to add my pbp, below. I hit the add button and paste the URL. I said it could not find a feed. So now what?
http://reader.mac.com/mobile/v1/http%3A%2F%2Fpaizo.com%2Fpaizo%2Fmessageboa rds%2Fcommunity%2Fgaming%2FplayByPost%2FgMLevisAdvancedSandsOfOsirionCampai gnArc%26xml=atom

As luck would have it I am also Mac/iOS :D, which reader(s) are you using?
Oh and a direct link to your pbp here.
For example the RSS for this thread is
http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/community/gamerLife/tech/noobNeedsRSS1 01LessonS&xml=atom
What you got was the Mac reader barf that mobile safari likes to generate. On iOS you need to press and hold on the the little orange icon, that you likely clicked on, this should give you the option to Copy the link instead of following it.
Press and hold to copy that link. That should be the RSS feed for your thread.

Always keep an eye to App ratings and reviews. The one you downloaded is broken and non-functional
You could try www.google.com/reader if you have a google account. This will work on both your Mac and and iOS and is the bases of most of the popular readers in the App Store right now.
I just gave FeeddlerRSS a try which seems to work (again uses Google as the backend)
When you are in Google reader you can add it to your Home Screen as a Web App, same button as the bookmark button only Add to Home Screen.

I think what you need more the a reader 101 is to sit down and work your way through the App store. Being able to spot lemons and bad Apps will help save you some money in the long run.
First thing I do when looking for an App is to change the stort by Most Popular or Highest Rated instead of Relevance. Second is I always check the breakdown on the reviews, how many 5,4,3,2,1 star rates where there and in what ratio. Also taking time to read the most helpful reviews and most critical reviews can highlight issues.
Checking the "All versions" is also helpful.
Another thing I look for is when the App was last updated. Especially if it hasn't been updated since major iOS changes have been done.
Try it for fun on some of the top 10 categories and see what those look like.
I virtually never Press the buy button before looking at the app entry and sometimes even checking out the developers website.

It's the free one, just called rss. Can you recommend any better ones?
Safari and FireFox have RSS subscription capability built into them. So does Mail. For the first two it's just a click on a web page and you'll get a prompt on where to save the bookmark. Mail works a bit differently you can find out how in it's help section.
