PCs as Goblins in Jade Regent

Advice

Sczarni

Hey guys. Just wanted to get some input on something, I have a PC who's wanting to play a goblin druid with a rat companion. While I'm inclined to let him, as I feel it's a character concept that he's interested in, and it will add an interesting dimension to the party.

The problem I run into, however, is the fact that that I'm considering running the Jade Regent AP, which, in the initial description, essentially throws out the fact that goblins will be the main adversary initially. And we'll be in Sandpoint, no less. Which, I'll likely play as post-RoRL, and pretty anti-goblin.

So, how do I frame it that my player's goblin druid isn't outright killed in the village? Do I align him with the initial group of baddies? Should I have him be from one of the other tribes, who doesn't care much for 'those other green guys'?

Input appreciated. I was well-aware that allowing him to play a goblin would add a bit of a social problem, but this is an entirely new wrinkle I hadn't considered.

Did your group play RotRL?

Spoiler:

If so, and you still have your copy of Burnt Offerings, check out room D3 from page 45.
-- In that room there are some "Goblin Babies." Did your heroes kill them, abandon them, or try to rescue them?
-- If they tried to rescure/rehabilite these goblin babies, then this druid could be one of them (and thus be human raised).

In any event, being aligned with any goblin tribe won't help much. The people of Sandpoint would still see such a goblin as an enemy and treat him/her accordingly.

If your party didn't play RotRL, then the info in the spoiler still makes life easy for you -- there's an orphanage in Sandpoint, after all, and so someone else may have done that thing suggested in the spoiler.

Beyond that, however, yes -- based on the nature of Sandpoint, an "unknown" goblin will be a problem -- everyone will know/remember someone who got eaten by Goblins, and that's just hard to get over.

However, one other possibility (especially since the character's a druid) -- the character is a goblin now because of a reincarnate. Grew up as an elf, human, whatever - and then got made into a goblin when he died in some sort of bad situation with the druids from whom he was learning. That way, he could be from Sandpoint, have friends there, and so at least *some* people will look past the goblin thing. (Plus, then, he won't be afraid of written text, etc, etc.)
