As said above does any one know? Cause i would like to i play alot of tengu as i like them and a few of my fellow PCs like them aswell.

The Swordtrained racial feature says that they're automatically proficient with sword-like weapons.

The list that follows is just a small list of what it includes, and gives some examples.

Since the list that follows includes both exotic and martial weapons, I'd say yes. It's clearly meant to give them proficiency with anything sword-like. The obvious limitation being that they don't have proficiency with non-sword-like weapons unless their class or a feat grants it.

Thats what i'm thinking though i"m trying to see if any one has an offical rulings on the subject, though I'm ruling it that way I play under a DM who likes "offical ruling".

Its pretty obvious what the point of the rule is. I dont see how you can interpret it as an exhaustive or complete list based on how its worded, frankly.

Then ask yourself this.

Does it say he gains proficiency with these swords and these swords only, or does it say that he gains proficiency with sword-like weapons while listing just a few included in this categorical proficiency?

The answer is the latter.

If it is anything like a sword, he is proficient with it (daggers included).

The GM should always have final say, of course, but yes—the intent of the tengu's ability is that it should be proficient in all swordlike weapons.

Thanks James, I know its a pain to have to pull a tooth from you designers, but when you have "Legalmiester Shieldmonkey" for a DM you hope you can say, " Hey according to the rule as written, and then supported by ( insert name here), I can do this" which in turn is just as demonstrative to you as mnot "ruling" but for all us gamers under the oppressive thumb of a tyrannical "ShieldMonkey!!!" I salute you good sir

And to the others who posted, thank you! you given validity to the arguement i've been avoiding with my DM and that you should know I rread him the rule and he was all Weapons stated as written. But hopefully I won't be gaming with him much longer he is slowly creeping into a WoW zombie!!

Any idea which class can get the most use of this awesome racial? besides martial class, the gish builds?

I have to admit that I am a WoW zombie but i still find time to sit behind the screen 3 times a month for a good ole fashion pencil, paper and dice game. :-)

PS, i like the Tengu also. I may find a place for an NPC in Carrion Crown.

Had a fellow pc of mine do a tengu brothers build i was a monk and he was a Sorceror. It was an awesome combo! the tengu brothers were feared as we sliced and diced our way threw enemies. He took the fire based bloodline, and maximized his touch and defensive spells... all this before the magus and ninja come out. now we are a 10th level Magus, and a 12th level Ninja.

Not really, monks can only use their good base attack bonus with weapons designed as monk (so far the best sword to use would be a temple sword, which monks are already proficient anyways.)

If you happen to be playing in Eberron then Whirling Steel Strike is pretty cool.

Proficiency with a scimitar is a prerequisite for Dervish Dance.
