Immortality through the printed word

Silver Crusade 5/5

Perhaps this is the wrong place to post this

Most pathfinders from what I understand hope to eventually have their exploits live on through the “chap books” put out by the Pathfinder society, and thus gain fame, and well immortality through the printed word.

I was wondering if the same could be said of some players. Perhaps this is a crazy idea. I know as Paizo prints more products expanding their world, presumably they will be more pathfinder lodges. I know the writers would much prefer to use their own creations to put in source books.

What if they used one of our characters, as say a new venture captain? It doesn’t have to me much say (name of character) alignment, class, and level…just a few words of text: for example: Fatum Aedituus Venificus, Human Male, NG, Cleric of Pharasma 3rd/ Wizard (necromancer) 3rd/ Mystic theurge 5-, well perhaps my PFS character isn’t a good example, but that would be one way for one of our characters to gain “immortality through the printed word”.

Perhaps it could be a perk of being a Venture Captain for the Pathfinder Society.

Perhaps they could hold a lottery that included players that have 12 level Pathfinder Society characters…and the winner gets to donate one of his characters for use as a NPC, perhaps a venture captain in a future product.

Maybe this is just a crazy idea…but there it is.

What do you all think? Would you like to see one of your characters in print, in a Paizo product?

Grand Lodge 2/5

I think is a great idea but it has drawbacks

Once you hand over your name you give up control so if the writers want to make you murder victim #3 for instance it is completely in their rights to do so.

What I would like to see is an honor wall posted somewhere for retired Pathfinders once they complete their service to the Society. In the order that they finish the high level arc.

Or perhaps a fan-supported Quarterly fiction pdf

I have made this same comment a few times myself. Immortalizing a retired character as a VC for a newly launched lodge is a very cool idea. There are numerous ways it could be implemented and the only real issue I see is that the more PC's become eligible, the more difficult it will be to select the next candidate. At first it would feel like a special reward, but could become commonplace.

My vote would go to DougDoug and one of his characters. With all the time/effort he has put into growing PFS, being the only "true" 5-star (wink wink, I jest), at least for another week or so, is not enough of a reward. Soon there will be a number of 5-star GM's and "luster" of that position will begin to fade.

The Exchange 5/5

I'll put the dissenting voice here.

Is it cool? Yes
How do we decide? AH!

While Doug Miles may be great and nice, I don't think anyone locally knows him (personally). Why would our locals not get that benefit? There are some local characters that would be awesome choices...

With the current organization of PFS, anyone getting that chance might appear to be the target of favoritism, so I would stay away.

Now if PFS were to "localize" or "regionalize" that might be something I would support as it would allow local instances to decide on a character that would be truly worthy of the honor, and people would know the character and the player in person.

Simply put, I would not like that.

I prefer to avoid any potential appearance of favoritism in any OP. That said, the idea would really be great!

I just thought it might be fun.

I remember when reading forgotten realms products, and they would have a line in one of their many time lines, like Adventureres drove out the zhentarim in yulash or there was a volcanic eruption in Solon. I had either run or played in the modules in which those events occurred. When I read that text I felt in some small way, me and my players took part in the history of the realms.

I appreciate that Paizo is trying to avoid the “cannon bloat” by having adventure paths independent of each other.

I just thought it might be fun to have a player’s character in print.

I just thought a lottery would be fair, and PFS players have a number.

And thanks for

Elyas,
Re-reading myself I do sound very much against it... Which I am not really. (I know)

Outside of localizing, having events (I would have to say either at PaizoCon or Gencon or VC-sponsored) where character retirement options might be possible would be a good idea.

Perhaps one PC (or a group of PCs) are offered some big reward by a king that forces them to quit adventuring, an advantageous marriage, etc. I haven't thought of the logistics but something like that could definitely be cool.

What I would not like would be a lottery or a nomination/voting system (unless such is the event itself).

If this suggestion is adopted, I'll have to start power-leveling my characters Hootie McBoob and Hugh G. Rection.

I can see it now " Venture caption Hootie Mc boob, has gathered you all together, to uproot a tribe of goblins infesting a valuable ruin." yes the scenario says "Hootie Mc Boob" ..

That would be a memorable moment.

Or "Venture Captain Fatum Aedituus Venificus has a mission for you" what idiot came up with this name? " you need to travel to Osirion etc etc"
